Sorry Alex, I wasn't able to watch the game last night. It sounds like it was a highly entertaining game, at least to a die hard Canucks Fan!!
I will definitely post my thoughts after the next game I watch. Vancouver plays San Jose tonight on HNIC and I will make sure I PVR it. It should be a great comparision of a team I view as using their defense a lot in the rush and a team I view as not using their defense a lot. SJ is also a more offensively focused team than Phoenix so I expect Van to play a more defensively structured game tonight compared to last night.

I guess i will have to PVR it as well as i have prior plans.
I'll await your analysis! BTW, big win for your Oil last night against what was the surprise leader in the league (Minny? Really?). On the road too! I'm officially putting them in the playoffs as far as my revised predictions go! Sure they're young, and many youngsters "hit a wall" eventually, but i just think there's too much talent there as long as they get the goaltending they need!
Let's put it this way, they're 2 pts behind the Leafs, who sit in 3rd in the west, with a game in hand. I picked the Leafs to fight for the last spot in the east. There's no reason that the Oilers can't do the same, or better in the west! As of now, Vancouver is the only team behind them in the west that i'd be willing to place money on to catch and pass them. Nashville will likely have something to say about the playoffs as per the norm but there's still St Louis and what i consider and over achieving Dallas team who are ahead of the Oil who could still falter! Shaping up to be an exciting second half of the season!
What an amazing job Ryan Smyth is doing. BTW, who did the Oilers get for him from NYI? I can't recall the details and how it worked out but i do seem to recall the Oilers couldn't come to terms with him and were sorta forced to trade him, no?
Also, to think, there was a debate as to whether or not RNH should stick with the big club? Sucks for the Canadian Juniors, but i can only imagine what sort of numbers he'd be putting up if he had been sent back to Jr. ? |

Smyth went to NYI for Nilson, O'Mara and a first round draft pick |

Firstly, let's keep this on topic. As much as I love talking about the Oilers(and even moreso when the news is good) this is not the place.
Unfortunately, my PVR bunked the game and I got about 2 minutes of the Sharks/Canucks game. My analysis will have to wait. |

Seems to me that the proper way to respond to this post has nothing to do with presenting facts since it is about whether or not you like the Canucks, which is an opinion. So here's mine: I would probably have no opinion of the Canucks if I didn't have a few friends who are die-hard fans. I don't particularly relish conversations in which people are unable to see what is plain to almost everyone else. In this case that Edler and Bieksa are nowhere near the top defensemen in the league and are both grossly overpaid. In my opinion this team is very weak on the blue line and rely much too heavily on their top three players. Of course the Luongo contract is something that is stupid (in my opinion long term high dollar goalie signings are almost always a bad idea,) but it's not really a reason not to like the team. Now I can't really back this next one up and I'm not going to try but when I watch the Canucks play I get the feeling that I'm watching a bunch of whiners who would prefer to wheedle a call out of the refs than work for one. Also, I am not all that passionate about hating the Canucks because I feel pretty confident that mismanagement of resources will have them near the bottom of the division again within a few years..Really? Of everyone on that team the one you felt was expendable was Ehrhoff? Why not hand over GM duties to a duck or a seven year old drunk on vodka? On the plus side watching the Sedins at their best is magic and it's tough not to like guys like Kesler and Malhotra. Unfortunately , that is just not enough to pull them out of their spot as my least favorite team. Now I will prepare myself to hear about how Kevin Bieksa is actually the second coming of Scott Stevens. |

Despite complaining about your friends not being able to see "what is plain to everyone else", you seem to be pretty jaded yourself against the Canucks, despite being not "all that passionate about hating them". Which is about as bad as being a die-hard fan that cannot see the reality in front of them.
Bieksa is overpaid this season (7M on a front-loaded contract), however I think that his cap hit of 4.5M is reasonable for a defenseman of his calibre and what he does. He does not score a lot of points but does get some. He's tough and plays a physical game. He is part of the #1 shutdown pair (with Hamhuis, who also makes 4.25M per year), and they are very effective in that role. He is certainly not the next coming of Scott Stevens, but he plays an effective and hard 22 minutes a game, in all situations. So if you think Bieksa is overpaid, then who are some comparables with other teams, and what do they earn?
Edler overpaid - is laughable. Edler currently makes 3.25M per season. However, he is the Canucks #1 dman, 24 min/game, top line PP, second line PK, on the ice in all situations, currently has 16 pts in 23 games and is probably good for 50-ish this season. He plays a very physical game, is very responsible defensively. Please find me another defenseman on any other team in the NHL that does all that for 3.25M. He might be one of the best defensive bargains in the NHL this year.

Probably because Don Cherry pointed it out in one of his Coach's Corner episodes? The Canucks certainly do their fair share of whining to the refs, however, I see every team looking to the refs for calls. They don't do anything that all other teams don't already do.

If only it were that easy.... I don't think anyone in Canuck land felt that Ehrhoff was expendible - they just could not afford him, or he would not take the (probably pretty good) deal that was offered to him. He got an extraordinary deal in BUF though, which would have been beyond what the Canucks could or would have have done anyway. |

Ok can this guy retire already? We get it you won you can shut up now. And to any one who is making comments about the riots if your not from Vancouver you probably don't really know what happened fans didn't start it "professional" rioters did and would have of we won or lost and the next day fellow citizens came and volunteered their time cleaning up so you can't say that the people of Vancouver are disgraceful just wanted to point that out :) |

Reply to the comments on fans I respect most opinions on the canucks fans and team. When evindence is planted that a Vancouverite or Canucks fan did something completley stupid it is quite saddening. However I believe that the comments that say all or even most Canucks fans are the worst, is a completley innaccurate statement. We will chirp a lot about other teams, but will almost never insult the fans of another city, were in it for the Hockey, the cheering, and putting a bit of friendly chirpy compitition. If other fans don't make chirps saying stuff like your team is road kill, or Kane is an over-rated player; I guess in that case we would be the worst fans, But I think we all know that most true hockey fans do this, and that the hate toward Canucks fans was created by mostly minor incidents, that can be found in most Canadian hockey cities, and most other American sport cities. Reply to topic Another comment that was wretched came in from David Bolland when he was interviewed and asked about the Sedins. (no current link available) In this he talked about how the Sedins were the Sedin sisters and made a bold statement that they would never be Blackhawks and if they were he would still call them the sisters etc... After that he made a witty chirp about Canucks diving, which most Canucks are used to hearing now (*Cough* Burrows) then made a completley stupid comment saying that if you go to Vancouver for too long the people there are idiots and will make you crazy. I found that last statement completley innappropriate for a player to say in front of media. Canucks coach Alain Vigneault did reply to his Sedin comments however by basically stating that Bollands comments were not thought out, and people as stupid as Bolland making comments like that will have no effect on Sedins
