Poll Question:
HNIC brought up the realignment proposition on Saturday night, and they talked about it again last night during the Canucks game. Its clear that some sort of realignment will happen given that WPG does not belong in the SE division, but which one do you prefer?

The 4 division plan looks like this: 4 divisions roughly separated based on geograpy:
Div 1: Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, LA, SJ, Anaheim, Phoenix, Colorado
Div 2: Winnipeg, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Columbus, Minnesota and Dallas
Div 3: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Florida.
Div 4: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey, Washington and Carolina.
Each team plays home-and-home against every other team in the NHL each season, and the rest of the games are made up in your division. Playoff matchups would guarantee that the first 2 rounds were inter-divisional, to build up rivalries. |

Instead of Detroit what about Columbus. They suck in the West maybe Carter back in the East will give them a boost.

The 4-division thing with the list there is kind of imbalanced... the West has 2 teams more than the east. Assuming a top-4 of each division makes it, it makes things easier for Eastern teams.
Detroit/Columbus still get hung out to dry being in the West as well.
Also, it leaves little to no incentive to win your division anymore. As long as you make it in, you know pretty much exactly which teams you'll be playing for the first 2 rounds regardless.

It is imbalanced - for now. It seems that they are building in a likely move for PHX out of the western end, which would even out the "eastern" and "western" halves.
I believe they also discussed that the first 2 rounds would be divisional (based on seeding), but for the last 2 rounds the entire league would be re-seeded based on overall standings. |
