I am salivating, start selling tickets now! I am there. Every game the Leafs play in Detroit is a crazy atmosphere, almost like a playoff game, almost like a home game. Last year the fan chant battle lasted the entire game. Could you imagine the big house filled with Half Leaf fans, half Wings fans, 100,000 people. I am giddy like a little school kid.

The next one had to include a Canadian team, and I think Toronto is a good choice. (All five previous Winter Classic games have involved only U.S. teams.)

Too bad the game takes place in the U.S. though – Canada is overdue to host an outdoor game. (And no doubt, they would have plenty of fan support.)

It will be 10 years since Edmonton hosted the Heritage Classic in 2003, and while Calgary hosted a Heritage Classic game in 2011, the official Winter Classic games have all taken place on American soil.

Can't argue too much about the northeastern destinations for the previous five Winter Classic games though. (Buffalo, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.) It's pretty hard to have an outdoor game anywhere else in the states.

And while Canada deserves to host a Winter Classic, Detroit is a good choice for 2013.

But if the NHL goes to Minnesota to host the 2014 game, I think that's a serious oversight. (And slight to Canada.)

Right. Because we Minnesotans don't deserve it because we don't care about hockey.

Minnesota would be a great choice, but a Canadian NHL city deserves the opportunity to host a Winter Classic. Heck - over 50% of NHL players are from Canada.

Just curious though - what are the TV ratings like in the US for the Winter Classic? Is this a factor in determining the match-ups, or who hosts the event?

Once again, I think Minnesota should get the opportunity to host an outdoor game (they're great hockey fans), but I think the next one (after Detroit) should go to a Canadian city. My choice would be Montreal.

Winnipeg has their brand new football stadium and would be beautiful to host a winter classic. with the new Jets, that would be superb

It's all but official that 2013 will be held in Detroit. After that, all that i've read seems to point to 2014 in Washington, and 2015 at the new Yankees Stadium in New York.

And there are plenty of other options in the US as well. As already stated, Minnesota would be a great spot. Colorado, St.Louis. I mean, the New York Rangers & Los Angeles Kings played at outdoor game at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1991! It was 95 degrees the day of the game, and still 80+ during the game...so one can be held just about anywhere!

I'm not so sure the NHL (or NHLPA) would allow an outdoor game in a warm climate today. Was the game (which took place at Caesar's Palace 20 years ago) a regular season game? What were the conditions like?

It can also be too cold for an outdoor game. I was at the 2003 Heritage Classic in 2003 (Edmonton vs. Montreal), and the game was nearly cancelled. It was around -20 degrees Celsius at game time, and from feedback and observations taken at the Oldtimer's game which took place beforehand, the ice conditions and temperature raised concerns about whether to cancel or postpone the main game. If it were 5 or 10 degrees colder (not likely for late November in Edmonton, but not impossible), the game most likely would been cancelled.

It can also be too wet to have an outdoor game. This would need to be a consideration for a city like Vancouver.

But there's a risk almost anywhere you have the game. In any of the past five Winter Classic locations, there was a possibility of a blizzard or rain, but luckily, no extreme weather occurred.

If you've ever been to an outdoor NHL game, it's a great event for the fans! The players like it too, and it's a great way to promote the game! And it's well worth the small risk that bad weather will cause an outdoor game to be postponed or cancelled.

Awesome! Long awaited, and totally excited it's a fantastic rivalry and great team like Detroit. Leafs will be ready for them.

Man, I am seriously getting tickets for this game . . . and I predict that the stands are at least one third if not more Canadian fans, mostly with Leaf jerseys. Can't wait.

Yeah, I just decided. ROAD TRIP 2012!

It was just an exhibition game Guest. I'm too young to remember it, but from what I've heard there were some minor delays due to the ice. The biggest issue though was grasshoppers...apparently the ice was littered in bugs :)

Vancouver? Forget it! If they ever gave "us" a game, it'd have to be under a HUGE umbrella!!!

Leafs / Wings is cool, though i'm not much of a fan of the outdoor game at all. I'd almost rather they just do the all star game outdoor as most of the games i've seen just don't seem to be "real" to me. They almost seem like exhibition games for some reason? But, maybe that's just me?

nope, I'm the same - one of the great things about hockey is watching games in a small rink (small as compared to large outdoor stadiums for football and baseball). As soon as you lose that intimate arena, it seems to be a struggle to watch live. What if you're up in the bleacher seats in a baseball stadium, watching a game of hockey that takes up about 1/4 of the floor? Boo.

Also, the cold - yah, spot the Vancouverite. I remember the first Winter Classic in Edmonton, when it was something stupid like -40 - who wants to be outside for hours in that?

Funny you say that nuxfan, cuz i was very close to going out to Edmonton for that game, just to be a part of it. Being a Vancouverite, it's prob a good thing i didn't go to what turned out to be a serious deep freeze! Lol.

I couldn't agree more though about the seating. I mean, can anyone really enjoy the game from where they sit? If you really wanna have an outdoor game, i say put it in close to where home plate is, and build some temporary stands on the other side(s) to increase the numbers. No need for 60,000 if only 6,000 can actually see/enjoy the game!

Are you referring to the Wings and Leafs? I've heard Toronto called the most hated team in Canada, but the Wings "the most hated team in the US"? That's a new one for me...
