How about the season this guy has had. Steps right into rafalski's spot and exceeds expectations with 23 points and a plus 25 rating up to this point. I don't think anyone could have seen this coming for how big of a suitcase this guy has been over the past few years. Funny thing is the only reason the picked him up is because lidstrom wanted a right handed defensemen to play with.
He's having a great season, but I wouldn't necessarily say nobody saw it coming. I think most, myself included, recognized he was stepping into the perfect situation in Detroit and that he was bound to have a career year. With Ralfaksi's retirement you knew White would see time on a very good PP, and that he would likely be paired with Lidstrom.
Myself, I knew White would be defensively protected by Lidstrom and the Detroit defensive system, and would be allowed to really flourish there offensively. He does have offensive skill, this is known - he is just a bit soft and small.
