Poll Question:
Let's get a word in about Chris Drury!
Some of you may remember when Cherry used to use that phrase like almost every weekend about Neely in the late 80s, early 90s. As always, he got a LOT of words in!
Well, how about Chris Drury! Another clutch goal tonight. Yes, it was a bad giveaway, but that was a nice deflection too. Remember when he was with the Avs! It seemed like he ALWAYS scored a big goal. And I heard something after the game tonight about him being Number 2 in playoff goals scored in the last 8 or so years (can't remember exactly what the stat was, but they said he was only behind another clutch guy, Joe Sakic).
So here's my question, excluding "star" type players and goalies, who is/was the ultimate "clutch" playoff performer for you?
* Lets say the level of "stardom" can't exceed the Glenn Anderson level, so players such as Sakic, Yzerman, Neely, and of course players like Gretzky, Lemieux and so on are excluded
I am going to put out a few names that I remember as always being particularly good in the playoffs (sorry, except for Drury, all are retired, some for a while). I'm sure I am missing some current ones and some from past years, so fire away.

A few i can think of are Patrick Marleau, Brad Richards and Patrick Elias. Some may not agree with Elias but in my opinion he is because he has a pretty good point production (not so muhc this playoffs) for a not very offensive Devils team. Although this year they have done a great job 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th leading scorers in the playoffs, pretty impressive in my books. By the way how about Parise in his 2nd years in the NHL he is leading the playoffs in goals (7) and is in 2nd in points (9). But i said other for Patrick Marleau because since im only 13 i haven't watched many of those guys play and i think Patrick Marleau is an amazing playoff performer, he has 51 points in 68 career playoff games and to me those are pretty impressive numbers, yes you can counter me and say well Anderson got 214 points in 225 career playoff games but I don't like to go souly off stats i like to witness and frankly i can't witness Anderson play. Also another fact i would like to sahre is that in the past 4 playoffs (including this years) Marleaus has gotten 43 points in 46 games which is nearly a point a game and im sure he will continue to grow and will win a few cups and i'll be rooting for him the whole way, unless of course the Sharks are playing the Oilers. |

It has to be Claude Lemieux. No matter how much I hate him, he is my vote here. From what I've seen of him, he was the reason why buffalo was eliminated from the playoffs in 94 (?). Him and marty simply took control of that series. He also played really well for Montreal in the playoffs when he played there. Same thing with the avs, he was such an instigator which made him hard to play against. Even though I hate him, i would want him on my team in the playoffs.

Well I dunno about the olkd timers but Brad Richards seems to really step it up during the playoffs. This year its gotta be Zach Priase. I barelt knew who he was brfore the playoffs and now I consider him a star.
I've figured it out, the guys gotta play like girls! |

I think that goalies should be considered for this too. its often the goaltender who makes the huge stop that leads to the big goal. St. Patrick did this many times with the Habs, as did J.S. Giguere with the Ducks. Goalies are often the most clutch, so i had to go with other.
When life gives you lemons throw them at the Ottawa Senators and their fans and hope it gets them in the eyes ;) |

I agree LF101. For example last year if it wasnt for Roloson the Oilers would have got no where. Also this year with Luongo on Vancouver.

Yeah, I agree about the importance of goalies. Maybe we can do another poll on them. For this poll, I wanted to focus on guys other than superstars and goalies. The guys on the list were not, with the exception of Anderson maybe, "stars", or flashy stars anyway (generally not 80 point scorers for instance).
I am not sure if Richards, Marleau are stars beyond what Anderson was - interesting question actually. But try to think a level or two down on the stardom scale. Are there any players out there at the Drury-like level for example, who are particularly clutch in the playoffs. I am not saying there are not - just curious who they are because I couldn't think of any. |

Drury is the current clutch player. I have not seen anyone in recent years to be as clutch as he.
Though the overall title remains with Claude Lemieux. This guy was sick in '86 and 93. Then in NJ, I think during the regular season he had something like 12 points (on regular shifts with limited missed games) and people were calling for his head. Well in the playoffs, he exceeded his regular season output. I don't know of any other player who played a regular shift during the season to ever to achieve this. Now that is playoff clutch.

drury has had consistent years of clutchness, claude lemieux had one playoff season.
i would like to nominate jamie lagenbrunner to this list of players, he did it for dallas, he did it for jersey. |

lemieux played well with all teams in the playoffs, not just one season. I don't know which one you're thinking of, but he played very well with New Jersey, Montreal and of course Colorado.

Like him or hate him, Lemieux was clutch for all of his teams in a number of seasons. Below is a sample, '86 and '87 being with the Habs, '94 and '95 with the Devils and '97 with the Avs:
86 20GP 10G 6A 16P 87 17GP 4G 9A 13P
94 20GP 7G 11A 18P 95 20GP 13G 3A 16P (CS Award)
97 17GP 13G 10A 23P
And a lot were BIG goals. 85-86 was his first season by the way. He had 3 points in 10 games in the regular season and then put up 16 points in his first playoffs. The Habs won the Cup that year and he was a big part of that, as he was for Cup winning teams in '95 for the Devils and '96 for the Avs.
I hate some things about the guy, but that is definitely clutch.
BUT, Drury is something else too and last night was yet another edition to his growing clutch legend. |

Drury seems unstopable. I think if a team is down by a goal and Drury is on they need to stick glue on someone and attach him to Drury.

Geez I can't get over how he is always at the right place at the right time like last night. Another clutch playoff performer who is one of the more under rated playes in the league Jamie Langenbrunner. |

Oh, I do hate Claude Lemieux. But I picked him. He elevated his game in the playoffs like no other I have seen since.
I love how every once in awhile somebody will just break out in the playoffs, though. In my draft we call it the dark horse pick. Fernando Pisani last year. John Druce had an amazing run in 1990, I think, and never went anywhere after that (14 goals in 15 games). Steve Penney with the Habs in 1984. Chris Kontos with 9 goals in 11 games with LA in 89-90. Those were all great performances from guys who basically had (or have) less than average NHL careers.
