Someone has got to take that title away from detroit.....Look in the stands, I thought I was watching a Devils game!!!! It's been like that all year. They claim to sell out each game, but then you look in the stands and all you see is empty seats.....So I'm saying we all dub Minnesota as the new "Hockey Town USA" (well, Minneapolis...Don't worry Mik, I know my USA). I mean, even though the team plays that boring trap style, and isn't too good, they still sell out no matter what....Kinda like "Hockey Town Universe" (Toronto)

I agree that Detriiot shouldn't be named Hockey Town, but I think they are named that because Detriot is called Motor Town so for hockey, Hockey Town would work. I don't know if i'm right thats just wjy I think they are called that. Because they definitley are not the best Hockey Town in the NHL!

I said the same thing last night! I saw hundreds of empty seats, and not just single seats. They should be stripped of their title. Granted I'm partial, but perhaps we should call Buffalo hockeytown???

I agree with you IHC about giving Minneapolis the name Hockey Town. I've never seen more dedicated American hockey fans than the Minnesotans. Of the Detroit games I've seen, however, the seats always look pretty full and people are waving their towels and cheering and having a great time. I haven't watched every game of course, so I haven't seen all sides of it. I'll take your word that some games had empty seats, and I'm all for giving Minneapolis the name it deserves. |

It´s just what i´ve red somewhere but the empty seats in Detroit had to do something with layoffs in the Carindustry and overpricing of tickets not so much with the fans enthusiasm for hockey.
Wich city who has the best fans I think I´ll leave to you to decide. |

You're right, it is "HockeyTown, USA". It's just sometimes called HockeyTown for short. |

We never claimed to be hockey town universe haha...but at the same time the reason we are called hockeytown is because we have won the most stanley cups of any team in the US with 10 and have been to 18 finals...NY has two teams and they both together only have 8 cups in 16 finals...Boston has 5 cups....minnesota isn't because they haven't won any cups and only made it to 2 finals (well they did win as the dallas stars)...and to call Toronto Hockeytown universe is kind of odd to me...they have only one more cup than Detroit...plus montreal has won what...22?...i'd say they are hockeytown universe...although i won't take anything away from toronto except that they haven't even been to the cup since 66-67 man...

I don't think that we should give the title of a Hockeytown based on how many cups a team has won. I think that Toronto is the Center of all that is Hockey and we love the sport dearly here. Detroit is losing its fanbase, or so it seams. I think that we should make Minnesota the "new" Hockeytown USA.

First of all, last time I went to the Hockey Hall of Fame, it was in Toronto, so that is why they are hockey town universe.
As for Detroit I went to game 2 the other night and i was very disappointed to see the empty seats. I don't think we should have it revoked yet, but I think Detroit should be put on notice. Hopefully we will add to our cup total this year, Go Wings!!!! |

i think buffalo should be named hockeytown... not detroit. how many cities do you not only have every game sold out, but have nearly some thousand people outside the arena watching the game on a jumbotron, not to menton they are there in 45 degree weather. and thats not all. for some of the games that r away, almost 8000 people are at hsbc watcing the game on many jumbotrons. im sorry but detroi just doesnt have that support or at least they dont show it |

Unbiased, I think it's Minnesota. It's a different culture up there. Biased, I'd love Buffalo to wear the crown. I think we've got the credentials. I'm onna start a poll on this to see what ppl think.

I think the title should go to Buffalo. Not only do they always have the stadium sold out and have viewers outside watching, they shattered the record for fan attendance at the 2008 Winter Classic. Over 72,000 fans packed the Ralph Wilson Stadium to watch the Sabres.
Buffalo is the NEW hockey town, Detroit who? |

Detroit is SELF PROCLAIMED HockeyTown. Simple as that. Go to a game at Joe Louis and you'll see how many morons there are that don't know crap about hockey. It looks empty because half the fans are in the hallways drinking, eating and talking because they don't care about the game. Christ, when Luongo got traded to Vancouver and they played in Detroit, fans all over were saying "who is this big guy they have in net?". Like, are you f'n kidding me? Also can't forget in the playoffs, the chants of "Clue-tee-er sucks". Detroit sucks azz. They're just lucky they have a great GM.

Any team that does well is "lucky" to have a great GM and/or "lucky" to have a great coach.
The fact is, as has already been mentioned, Detroit is Hockeytown, USA primarily because they won back to back Cups and have been dominant for so long. Minnesota is barely working on back to back playoff appaerances, nevermind back to back Cups. And if Minnesota is such a great hockey town why did they lose the North Stars due to poor fan support back in the early 90's???? LOL.
Seriously some of you should do some research before spouting off |

Have you all missed the point? I live in Detroit, and I'm ashamed of the name.
It's self-proclaimed and untrue. Let's look at it in the simplest of terms:
"Hockey" town. It's not HOCKEY town. It's RED WINGS town. I will not deny the latter monniker. Wings yes, hockey - NO!!!!!
Remember when the IHL was around? We won a Turner Cup championship in 97 and went to the finals in 98 (losing in 7). Some would say that the NHL just overshadowed the IHL because of the long wait for the Wings. I say that's partially true. I also say that at the pinnacle of everyone's hockey interest, we had another pro hockey team playing up the road and NOBODY was there. We used to get free tickets and go to tons of games. You could sit wherever you wanted. The IHL was pretty good hockey. Not NHL....but, if we're HOCKEY town - you'd think I'd get kicked out of a 3rd row seat once a week. And, it's not like the games were on the same nights.
Furthermore, whoever made the point about Luongo was DEAD ON. The average person here doesn't have a clue. I mentioned Jonathan Cheechoo to a guy last year and he said, "I've never even heard of him." Does NHL goal-scoring leader mean anything to anyone? I've got a Lecavalier sweater I bought back when he wore the "C". I've worn it regularly since then. Last week I was asked, "did you just go buy that because he's leading the league in scoring?"
If it's not red and white, the average Detroiter DOESN'T CARE about HOCKEY.
I haven't seen the numbers recently, but the Phantoms (Philly) used to sell out all the time. Minnesota, especially for high school hockey, is a hotbed too.
I can't say who should own the title.....I only know we shouldn't. Places where fans go, regardless of their team success - THOSE are the real fans. And, to "strip" us of the "title" means to get the local beer drinking, Yzerman T-shirt-jersey wearing idiot to back down from this claim. Good luck with that.

Hmm I guess you guys, must have forgotten, that Michigan, is in a Economy slump, I know a few people from Michigan... it's either buy groceries for the week... or goto the Red Wings, and not eat for the week. .
The empty seats have nothing to do with people not wanting to go, it's the fans, that cannot afford to go to the games anymore.
there capacity is like 20, 667... roughly maybe more or less... and they have 18,000 - 19,000 a game at home.... I really think thats pretty good for a state that has such a poor economy... to give it to a team that constantly sellsout everygame is just pathetic, if they have nothing to show for.
The only reason why Detroit is ''losing'' its crown is because of THIS season alone due to lack of attendance... you gotta be kidding me... |

Here is an attendence list.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?year=2008
Detroit is currently averaging 18,510 of 20,066 thats at a 92.2% Capacity. I think thats bang on for a state thats going through rough patches.
Since 2002 Detroit has sold out almost every game, stats do not lie.
Again, Basing Hockeytown, USA off attendance is rather rubbish. |

Detroit is and will continue to be hoceky town. It is the most prolific of the Originial Six American cities.
Interestingly, this was featured in Sports Illustrated. They favour Philly, Buffalo, and Minnesota. Ha.

Oh never mind, I found it.
Moderators, I have made a concious effort to post quality over quantity, sorry about that slip up.
Guest, you are right. Wings town is more appropriate. But I would dare say the name 'hockey town' is assumed to come with the NHL in mind.
I always took it to mean that that Detorit is the best hockey-city that is American in the NHL. That might be a little push, to expect everyone to infer that. However, sports illustrated seemed to agree.
Now, in regards to your comment, you are correct. Hockey is not the biggest sport, nor is it big even outside the NHL, in comparison to other American cities.
Think of Buffalo. Many a tournament at a young level are hosted there. Many young teams come from there. The community is involved. And yet at the NHL level, they stunk for a while. It may have to do with geographic location, what with being a two hour drive from Toronto, even less to the GTA, where many NHlers come from, including the great one. And there is a reason the winter classic was hosted there.
However, can we agree that in regards to MY understanding of the slogan, Hockeytown is Detroit? In regards to your Guest, you are right

Which leads me into reason #2 that this is not Hockeytown, but "Whoever is GOOD town". See "Tigers Success" in the headline news. All of the Joe Louis Arena dollars are now spent at Comerica Park for the Tigers. People still have money to spend. Hockey fans everywhere know that the seats go to people with money first and hockey fans second. You don't think there are 20,000 people in the greater Detroit area who can afford season tickets? Wrong. It's not hip to be a Wings fan anymore, so the affluent are going where it is trendy- to see the Tigers.
If we're any TOWN, it's football town. Why? People love the Lions even though they stink. We loved the Detroit Drive too, although they were good.
Good grief......

Why is Toronto called Hogtown? I haven’t seen any hogs here lately.
It’s a marketing gimmick people, get over it. It’s called Hockeytown U.S.A because they want it to be called Hockeytown U.S.A.
Mike Illitch even owns a bar across from Commerica Park called Hockeytown.
I don’t know why everyone is hating on the city, they only started having their so called attendance problems beginning in the playoffs of 2007 playoffs.
This season they’re still selling out 92% of their seats, which is more than I can say for some other U.S. teams.
They play in an arena that was built in the early 70’s, it’s one of the largest arenas in the league, so a sell out means selling over 20,000 tickets a game, that’s more than the precious Maple Leafs. Even with the economic problems the city is facing, they’ve still got over 17,000 fans with their butts in the seats.
So tell me where the problem is? Whatever the problem is, it’s only temporary, they city is too passionate about their Wings to become the next New Jersey.

In my opinion NO! detroit is not hockeytown! I am appualed even thinking that Americans think the game is theirs! it's not , Canada's game, so therefore the real hockeytown should be where the REAL hall of fame is! |

Detroit doesn't call itself Hockeytown, it's calls itself Hockeytown U.S.A.
There's no doubt that Montreal, Toronto and Canada in general is more hockey crazy.

Maybe you guys should get your heads out of your asses EDMONTON is the obvious winner for hockey town, we have the most loyal fans in the world and not to mention have sold out of season tickets for the rest of the year and are people are already bidding for next years. THe Oilers fans are the loudest as well, setting a record in 2006 for loudest crowd and singing the national anthem every hoome game and when others tried to duplicate, it was a freekin embarrasment. have detroits fans set a record for loudest, Minnesota, Buffalo..NO and besides we hold both crowns.......City of Champions as well as hockey town

Once again let me remind you that Detroit does not call it self “Hockeytown”. It calls itself “Hockeytown U.S.A.”.
You mentioned Edmonton being Hockeytown. Through 25 home games at Rexall this year, Edmonton has had 420,975 fans walk through the gates.
Compare that to 443,136 through 24 home games in Detroit. That’s 22,161 more fans than Edmonton with 1 less home game. So tell me which of the two teams has an attendance issue?
About the noise, I don’t doubt that Edmonton has some great fans. But you have to admit that acoustics has a lot to do with noise. Plus, Edmonton may have been one of a number of teams to actually measure the noise level in the arena. Who knows, maybe some other cities have had more noise, but have never bothered measuring.
As for the dedicated fans, they do right now, however I can remember back in the early 90’s when Peter Pocklington almost moved the Oilers to Houston because of lack of support.
You said that Edmonton has sold out of it’s seasons tickets for this year, and that people are bidding for next year. Well take a look at Toronto, try getting any ticket to any game for the next 5 years. Besides going to a scalper, it’s impossible to get tickets from the box office.
City of Champions? Edmonton has won 5 Stanley cups within an 8 year span, that’s amazing. However what have they done since 1990? They’ve gone 18 years with only 1 appearance in the finals. Hardly noteworthy. You mentioned you go to school, not sure if it was high school or post secondary, but either way, do you even remember the last time Edmonton won the cup?
I guess my point to this is that Edmonton cannot claim the “Hockeytown Canada” title, or the title of “City of Champions”. Those two titles should go to Montreal, with Toronto being second.

There is no question Detroit is Hockey Town USA, hkelirah hit that one dead on.
And Edmonton as Hockey Town, North America? Let me remind you that Montreal is the winner here.
Toronto it could be argued, deserves recognition for their continued hope when the team is dead last. Calgary fans, hey, I like em.
But from all the points you mentioned:
This season, their lowest home attendance was 20 019
Noise? When they broadcast a Montreal game, I actually have a hard time hearing the announcers, no joke. Im sure a lot of you know what I am talking about. How is that for measuring methods?
Dedicated fans? What fans are more loyal than those of Montreal? They get into fights over it. They are hot blooded and they love their Habs. A lot of them waste much of their weekly salaries on beer to watch the game, or tickets!
Oh and what was that, city of champions? 24 stanley cups my friends, including 5 in a row and 4 in a row. Including being the last Canadian team to win one. Including having good, solid teams every year. In this NHL, almost no one wins a cup two years straight. But Montreal has always had great teams, they have the record to prove it, and always will.
Habs get number 25 this year |

If I absolutely have to say who deserves this title, I'd say either Montreal or Toronto, and if I absolutely had to name only one city, I'd say Montreal (because, for one thing, it just makes sense that hockey would be extra huge there given the lack of other professional sports teams), but the difference in "hockey fanaticism" in the two cities, if any, is small in my opinion. Both could be clinically diagnosed as "MASSIVELY FANATICAL"!
But I don't really like the label "Hockey Town" anyway. I think it's kind of silly to be calling one place's fans the "best" or "greatest" and so on. There are great fans in many cities I am sure. For various reasons, historical and otherwise, my guess is that Toronto and Montreal have the edge in hockey craziness (if that is what we are measuring) over other cities, but I still don't think either one should be labelled "Hockey Town". If we are just shooting the breeze about this topic, knowing that it is very silly, that is one thing, but if some of you actually seriously believe that there is a significant point here (that Montreal CLEARLY is more deserving of the label "Hockey Town" than Toronto, and it actually would bug you if a Toronto guy said differently), well, I think society's obsession with being "the Greatest" at this or that has gotten into your head a little too much.
And even if it's true to a certain degree that Montreal is the most deserving of this Hockey Town label, I would still argue that Leaf fans, particularly those like Antroman who have stayed loyal for 40 years inspite of all the crap in Toronto, are more deserving of praise than Montreal fans who have sat back and enjoyed all the success over the years. |
