(It's in Columbus, Ohio, and I happen to be going there during the draft . The Nationwide Arena is 10 miles away from the OSU campus)

Anyway, the blogs for the North American prospects are on NHL.com ( http://fans.nhl.com/Groups/NHL_Connect_Official_Entry_Draft_Headquarters/ ), and this article about the European prospects was kinda interesting: http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=316716

A player from Denmark is on the list?? That's certainly new. And Germany is really kicking up their hockey developmental programs, they've got 10 potential prospects! And this is the one that really stood out--Latvia and Belarus combined have six prospects. Six guys sounds like big whoop, but from Latvia and Belarus it's quite something. Neither one (especially Belarus) have been great hockey nations and traditionally haven't done well in international competitions, and now they've got six potential NHLers. Latvia has Darius Kasparaitis representing it in the NHL, Belarus has none. Now all of a sudden they've got all these guys. And even Estonia has someone. They've never been known for great hockey talent and rarely even participated in international events or had NHL players. Looks like hockey is starting to take off across the pond. Good, the more hockey in the world the better.

And, to get back to the big eight, Finland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia aren't looking as good as usual this year, but Sweden's looking great. Russia's looking good too, they've got the #1 international scout pick, Alexei Cherepanov. Canada obviously looks great, they've got Carey Price, Karl Alzner, Keaton Ellerby, Angelo Esposito, and Kyle Turris. The US has some good picks too, including Patrick Kane and James van Riemsdyk.

I'm not sure if you mean he could be drafted because he was drafted last year. Also Carey Price has already been drafted

Young talents from Denmark and some frome Germany have started to play in Elitserien (Elit-leage worlds second hockey leage after NHL) so I wouldn´t be surprised if we would see some more Danish or German players in the NHL soon.

An article on some drafted swedish players from the same club and an explanation of the sudden increase of good danish hockey players:

The best Russian Superleague team might beat the best Elite-league team but the Elite league is the better league overall......league

I see

In other news...
Interesting article I found on NHL.com....Max Pacioretty could be a potential scout pick and may be in the NHL in a few years. He was born in California and moved to Connecticut at an early age. His parents signed him up for hockey at age 4, and he loved it ever since. He'll be going to the University of Michigan this fall.

That's the great thing about hockey - the thing that differentiates it from other sports. A heady, gritty player with less talent can make his way into the NHL despite having been projected and drafted low. Granted, talent still matters, but I think in hockey more than any other sport this notion is true. If you look at football, players with skills (speed, leaping ability, hands) are at a premium. Players that aren't drafted in the first 3 rounds have a bleak chance of having a long career.

On topic, Chicago is gonna be a beast in 3 years if they can get an everyday goaltender. I wonder who they're gonna draft?

Because the demands on a goalie are mostly mental, it means that for a goalie, the biggest enemy is himself." ~Ken Dryden

Chicago had first pick and they were smart and took Patrick Kane (a Buffalo native!). Alexei Cherepanov went to NYR...good move. He, like Malkin, can't speak English. Tyutin would have to be his translator, lol. Esposito went to Pittsburgh--that makes FOUR young stars. Man the Pens are gonna be dangerous in the future. 10 Americans were selected (mostly d-men), tying the record. The USHL has been producing some great d-men of late, good news for US hockey fans!

I'm in Columbus and I'm going to the second round tomorrow. Can't wait. (Sabres get first pick!!)

I was at the draft live today, and I loved how everyone booed the Senators! It was great. And the Leafs got their usual round of boos as well.

That's where I was. Pretty sweet.

Lars Eller, the "Great Dane", could potentially be a top-notch player when he joins the NHL. He is the first player from Denmark ever to be selected in the first round, and is supposed to be a great skater. He could help the Blues a lot.

I think Eller and Regin could become really good hockey players eventually......nordic rivalry....it feels like losing to Denmark would suck even more than to loose against Finland (not like it happens alot HaHa).

Denmark's team isn't very strong, so losing to them would be embarassing. BTW, why is it that some Nordic countries (Finland and Sweden) are good at hockey yet others (Norway, Denmark, Iceland) hardly play and don't have strong national teams? I guess the Norwegians spend too much time skiing

By geographical reasons I suspect.
Both Denmark and Iceland have mild winters, Iceland because of the stored energy in the water surrounding it and the Golf stream, Denmark because of it´s southern position (relative). Norway is mainly made up by mountains and fjords and with the Gulf stream passing right by they don´t have much sea ice to skate on.

Another contributing reason to why Iceland doesn´t have a good team is their small population of 300 thousand (yet they manage to have a decent national soccerteam).

And I do think you have a point about the norwegian love for skiing

The Danes seems to be on the right track now, if they start to play well the sport might become more popular and more young people will start to play (some more indoor arenas wouldn´t hurt either).
