Poll Question:
Ray Emery signed with the Ottawa Senators for 3 more years averaging $3.16 million per year. Is he worth it?

I don't think he is worth anymore than what he's getting rite now. To me he's just an average goalie who can fight. |

He is being rewarded for backstopping the Sens to the final, as he should be. Remember, he was supposed to be Gerber's backup this year, and he proved himself to be a legitimate no. 1 guy. He would be making that money soon, elsewhere, if the deal hadn't been done, so good for him, and good for the Sens- if they still have cap space for both Spezza and Heatley. |

I personally think that rewarding a goalie for playing well over a short period of time(ie, the Playoffs) is a poor hockey decisions. Look at Theodore as a perfect example. He got huge money for playing well over a short period of time and now he is hardly a back up. Gerber is another. He had one decent season. That's doesn't mean it will last. Anyone remember a vezina winner named Jim Carey?? What ever happened to him. One good season does not an elite goalie make.
Not saying Emery fits in this catagory. I think he is a fine young goalie. To think he is in the $3.5 ish a year mark that puts him in a catagory with goalies like Roloson, Backstrom, Mason, Miller, Huet, Biron, and Ward. Not really the elite of the league, but capable starting goalies. I think he belongs in this group, so the money is justified in my opinion.

Theodore, Gerber and Carey have never backstopped any team to the final. What Emery did for the Sens is much bigger than winning the Vezina, or Calder, or Jennings, or just having a really good regular season. I'm sure there are better examples that you could come up with as far as goaltenders who have done what Emery has. These three have not. |

But was it that Emery was that good or the team in front of him that good. It's not like he played a Roy in 86 type playoff. He just did his job. I don't recall him really stealing any games that Ottawa should have lost had it not been for Emery.
Roloson and Ward are perfect examples. Both backstopped their teams to the finals and both got big increases the next year. And neither could get their teams back to the playoffs.
In honesty, do you think that Emery will be or has been he key to Ottawa's success?? I don't. Solid young goalie without questions, but an elite player who is the "game stealing" type I just don't see.

I don't neccesarily beleive that Emery is a "game stealer", and I do agree that his team served him well, but to be as stable as he has been behind Hasek and (apparently) Gerber, he has proven himself over the course of two seasons. I would hate for the OILERS to sign him at that contract, but he'd be worth it for many teams around the league. Kudos to the Sens for giving him that confidence! |

Compare to the NHL market for goalies, Emery signing is pretty good. If you were a GM, how much would you be willing to pay for the following goalies?

See if you can figure out who is who. Answers to follow. Neither one is Brodeur, Kipper or Luongo. |

I think that Bryan Murray got it just right with the signing of Sugar Ray. He is a developing goaltender in the league and at this salary he will be worth every penny that he is making.

I like the deal. Ottawa has a problem now with two goalies making a total of 6 mil. This definatly handicaps them for next year with trying to sign Spezza and Heatley.
Second place is only first place of the losers. |
