Poll Question:
Sidney Crosby has just signed a 5 year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins averaging US$8.7 million per year. Worth it, or not?

Choices:

Yes, he is worth it
No, he is not worth it

No question he is worth it. He's the best player in the world before he hits 20 yrs old. Anyone who votes "no" is biased or not much of a hockey person.

or they feel that 8.7 million is too much for any athlete. Or they have substantial reason to believe he is not the best player in the league. (points alone do not dictate a players entire worth)

OF COURSE HE IS WORTH IT! He is the best in the league and could have asked for the Maximum and would have been worth it.

Worth it, yes. Over paid? Perhaps not. Keep in mind that he signed this deal with one year left on his 3 yr entry contract. So, really they are paying him $45mil + whatever he makes now, probably in the range of $800,000 for SIX years. Which averages about $7.6 a year.

8.7 million a year, wears #87, was born in '87 , on the 8th month of the 7th day.

That is just crazy!

And yes he is worth it, if you can win the scoring title at age 19 I'm pretty sure you're worth it.

Admin are you thinking of joining the IHC club?

I think that Crosby is definitely worth 8.7 million a year. The Pittsburgh Penguins have done a very good thing by keeping Crosby. He got the most points in the last regular season.

Yes...When you look at what the other free agents signed for he is under paid...

Yeah he's worth it, but about the youngest to reach 100 or 200 points--Crosby simply didn't/won't turn 19 or 20 until a few months later. Had Gretzky been born after August 7 of the year after he was born rather than January of the previous year, he would still hold the record.

He's going to have $43.5 million by the time he's 25. What's he gonna do with all that money? Lol

Don't forget he is also the first player to 100 points who doesn't have to shave and looks like he wears lipstick on TV! (That's what my wive thinks) Let's not too much weight into how young he is to do this and do that. If the NHL didn't have a rule against signing players under 18, Gretzky would have had nearly 100 points as a 17 year old. He turned 18 into his first WHA year and had 110 points. Plus 20 playoff points in 13 games as a rookie. So, let's not get too crazy about how Crosby is the youngest to do this or that. It doesn't prove that he's the greatest, just has the potential to do amazing things.

He could have easily asked for the league max and got it. He is still, in my opinion, not head and shoulders about everyone else. However, he has shown he can be. $8.7 is higher than Thorton and Iginla signed for, so it tells me that Crosby is kinda saying I want to be recognized as the man, but I don't need to be the top dog like Briere(incredibly over paid!)

In the world of hockey, it may be an underpayment. Thinking of what he might do in the future, it could(and more than likely will) turn out to be a steal for Pitt.

Thank you, Beans for exacting the difference between the inaugural years of Gretz and Sid. Anyone around at the time the Oilers were part of NHL expansion knows what an absolute phenomenon Wayne was. The rest can only manufacture, or rely on Sid-serving statistics. Having said that, and given modern day NHL economics, the Kid is worth every penny.

Crosby should not be getting a 8.7 million$ contract. He is a great hockey player and he should be getting a higher contract. I do think that 1 year Crosby will go into a slump but still HIS CONTRACT IS WAYYYYYYYYY TO LOW.

There was an interesting discussion on off the record yesterday about this. Some of the panel were happy with Crosby, saying that more players should do what he did. Basically take a lower contract to stay with a team with the purpose of winning. Others said that he was hurting his NHL brothers as this will keep contracts lower.

I say hats off to the Kid. It's one of the more grown up things he has done. To say he is committed to a team winning rather than getting more money. I think more players should do it!

Agreed Beans. I can't believe some people reason this way. How much do these people need to make? The minimum salary is what half a million or something? Hurting his brothers? It's ridiculous. If you can't live very comfortably on that much money then you're an idiot and don't deserve to have it.
I give credit to Sid but at the same time he's making so much from his endorsements he probably doesn't care if he even gets paid by Pittsburgh. The only reason he would care is the recognition in the form of his paycheck that says he is the top dog in the NHL. It seems it doesn't matter to him though and that is indeed a good sign. I think he's got a pretty good head on his shoulders.

The way they were talking on off the record was that the top player should always make the best salary...

The top salary would be based on the Cap x 20%, so 10 million...

I think he did the right thing, if another player signs for more then so be it...I do not think Crosby would care...

Crosby probably wouldn't even need to get paid in the NHL and still live a great life. With all those RBK endorsements im sure he's loaded.

Yeah he is getting paid more with the Rangers (5 years for $35 mil....$7 mil/year), but he's not ridiculously overpaid like Briere.

I heard the Sabres offered Drury more than what he got with NYR but left anyway. Wonder why??

And ya, Crosby's contract, other than being the mythical "87? number, is about $1.5 more than Iginla and Thorton took to say with their teams. So it does say he is top dog but still not looking to cripple his team with the highest contract possible. Good on him!

I hope more players take the lead from Thorton, Iginla, and Crosby and take a little less money to keep the team strong. It would be better for the quality of the league.

But, it would hurt marketing a little as every little punk wouldn't be able to run out and get every jersey from every team his favorite player is with. Think of a Ryan Smyth fan. He had to buy two more jerseys in the past 6 months!

Beans I already have a Leafs Jersey with 87 on it,,,

Sorry it is my daughters, and she was born in 87, and has had that jersey since 2001.

So if Crosby ever plays for the Leafs...Okay I am dreaming...

Well they did a pool with all the players in the NHL and they said the one team they don't want to play for is Buffalo because of gang violence and sleezy hotels. But I would love to play in the HSBC Arena with a sell out every night and thousands more outside in -30 watching on a screen. True fans in Buffalo, just I guess not a pretty town except the Niagra Falls.

Is that the reason players don't go to Buffalo? I was wondering about that. But really, a guy only has to be in town for what 8 months a year, and half of that is on the road. At least 75% of the other time is playing home games or practicing, so it's not that much. Plus, Buffalo is like an hours plane ride from pretty much any city on the North Eastern seaboard. So on those three day off times before a game, the guy could go see his family in a different city.

I can't see Buffalo being that bad. Has to be better than Toronto!

HAHAHAHA!

PS-Pucknuts, Crosby in TO is not that big of a pipedream. Might have to wait a while, but you know that thing with great Canadian Hockey players. They all say at one time in their career, they want to play in TO. Gretzky wanted to, but it just didn't work out. Crosby might go there, but in about 15 years.

That would make sense...except in Drury's case. NYC's gotta be just as crime-ridden as Buffalo if not more. He went from one crime hole to another. Also, downtown Washington, where the Caps' arena is, is notorious for crime, especially at night which is when games are, but players don't seem to be shying away from the Capitals.

i think the reason player don't come to Edmonton is the stabbing's here, 4 in an hour last night, kinda soundes like Calgary the other week with the 5 stabbing in 1 hour that they had too, makes me sick to my stomach.

It is tragic that these things happen in our favourite cities. Nobody can pinpoint the reasons for these tragedies, but they can occur anywhere. That being said, I read in the Toronto Sun, every week, something similar to what has happened recently in Alberta. The sad part is, it doesn't always make the front page here.

This has nothing to do with players coming here. Edmonton is a safe city to live in. I live in Edmonton, in fact right off Jasper Ave in downtown. I have never encountered a situations where I could have been stabbed or shot. I avoid those kinds of places and I don't do drugs. Not unlike an Oiler player would do. It's not like there are random drive by shooting happening. 95% of all the stabbing and shootings are drug and/or gang related.

Don't make Edmonton out to be this horrible city full of crime because it is not. Not even close.
