Poll Question:
What do you think is the toughest Conference today?

Also some facts I heard on the T.V (I think thescore) that going into the all-star break the top 5 highest goal scoring teams were from the east and the top 5 teams with the lowest goals against were from the west.
Could be wrong but I think thats what I heard.

The west has beaten the east handily head-to-head over the past 2 seasons since the lock out and they will do it again this year.

A 7-9 team in the west would get into the east playoffs comfortably at this point.

Colorado, in the West, finished ahead in point of the bottom 3 teams in the east who made the playoffs. That something to note!

Looking at it in the past 2 year (new NHL) I have found out that it is closer than it may first appear.

If you add all the stats from all the teams in the league, this is what you will come up with

Games - obviously equal
Wins - The West has 22 more wins than the East.
Win % - West has .504, the East with .495
Games taking points(Wins+OT losses)-West had 270 and the East 292
Games with Points % -West has .614 as does the East

So, looking at that, it appears that the games in the East may be more closely matched and are more likely to end in a tie than the West. However, if you think of the Win factor, if you looked only within conferences, Wins and Losses would match(they have to), so the West with more Wins tells me that when a East Team and a West Team match up, the West team is more likely to win.

A couple of other point I found out:

West Away records are not as good at the East Away records.
West Home records were better than East Home Records.

I think this says a lot about travel. It is much more impactful in the West because of the distances. The East has far less travel.

Goals For is higher in the West(by almost 400 goals)
Goals Against is lower in the West(by most than 500 goals)

The West had sent 10 different teams to the playoffs the past 2 years, 6 of those teams made it both years.
The East had send 12 teams with 5 being repeat playoff teams.

The spread of total points from the past two years of the 1st(Det) vs 15th(STL) in the West was 99 points.
The spread of total points from the past two years of the 1st(BUf) vs 15th(WAS) in the East was 83 points.

So, from all this, the way I figure it is that the East is a more competative conference and the West has more of a spread between the best and the worst. However, the best teams in the West are better than the best teams in the East.

Looks good but for example "Detroit 13/8 = 1.08", it is actually 1.625...
and
What is Home Game Taking Points?

I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.

Ah, you are right Puck. I had a few other catagories in that I took out but forgot to change the formula. I will have to fix it.

Home games taking points is wins + OT loses. Basically number of games that the home team took at least one point.

They catagories were Win %, Games taking Points %, Home Win %, Home game taking points%, Away Wins, Away Wins Taking points %, GF/game, GA/Game(lowest ranked 1). Then, add all the rankings together and divide by 8. So, the lower the number, the higher the team ranked overall. Here is what I came up with, teams in the West are Bold.
Team Rank Points Ranks Ave
Detroit 13 1.63
Buffalo 33 4.13
Ottawa 37 4.63
Dallas 45 5.63
Nashville 45 5.63
Anaheim 63 7.88
San Jose 66 8.25

New Jersey 68 8.50
Carolina 80 10.00
Calgary 88 11.00
Vancouver 91 11.38

NY Rangers 95 11.88
Colorado 100 12.50
Minnesota 108 13.50

Atlanta 114 14.25
Tampa Bay 125 15.63
Montreal 126 15.75
Toronto 133 16.63
Florida 142 17.75
NY Islanders 153 19.13
Edmonton 161 20.13
Los Angeles 187 23.38

Pittsburgh 187 23.38
Phoenix 193 24.13
Boston 197 24.63
Philadelphia 201 25.13
Columbus 207 25.88
Washington 217 27.13
Chicago 221 27.63
St Louis 224 28.00

Yes, Detroit was that good. They ranked no lower than 3rd in the league in any of those 8 catagories.

So, 6 of the top 10 teams are in the West.

Another interesting thing I just noticed is that Detroit(1) and Nashville (6) are in the same division as the 27th, 29th, and 30th teams (Columbus, Chicago, and St. Louis)

Also, looking at Buffalo(2) and Ottawa(3), they are in a division with 17th, 18th, and 25th.

I guess my point is that that 4 of the top 6 teams appear to be in divisions with weaker teams.

Also, interesting to not that 3 of the teams in the Pacific are in the top 10.

Not sure what it all means, but it's still interesting.

Some teams play in a weaker division, they play those teams more, therefor they should have more wins...

I am trying to find if there is a list of teams, and how they played against teams above 500...no luck yet...

I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.

The East had three teams below 500 last season. The only team that made a vast improvement was Philadelphia.

The West had 6 teams below 500, they all made a little head way in the off season, but nothing that great.

The West had Colorado not make the playoffs with the highest number of points ever (95).

I guess it matters on what teams you play in each division, or conference. You could luck out and be Detroit who has three teams below 500 in their dividion...
