Given that the NHL Board of Governors voted on Tuesday ( http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-boardofgovernors&prov=ap&type=lgns ) to change the schedule from the current system of:
8 games against each divisional opponet 40 games against conference opponents (4 against each team) 10 games against opposing conference (leaving out 1 division each year) ------- 82 games total
What do you think would be a good schedule that would still put a premium on divisional play but allow all 30 teams to play each other every year?
An interesting proposal I came across (here - http://www.hockeyanalysis.com/?p=465 ) suggests the following:
4 games against each home conference team >>> 56 1 game against each opposing conference opponent (alternating home and away each season) >>> 15 11 games at each team's discretion with the caveat that you can't use more than two of them against the same team. (ie. Ottawa could play 2 more against TOR, MTL, CAL, VAN. EDM, and one more agaisnt PIT - or whatever but not play TOR 3 times.)
Total - 82
While this is an interesting idea, I can see a huge issue with trying to cater to the individual requests from 30 different teams.
Another idea would be
8 divisional games >>> 32 <<< 4 home and 4 away 2 conference games > 20 <<< home and home 2 opp. conf. games >> 30 <<< home and home Total >>>>>>>>>>>>> 82 <<<<
This would keep the premium on divisional rivalries and it would allow each team to play every other team in the league each year.
What are your thoughts and ideas?

Anything is better than this years schedule for Canadian teams.
There are no games between the East and West. Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa do not play Vancouver, Edmonton, or Calgary...

No argument from me there. |

I really hate the schedule as it is not. The Battle of Alberta or the Battle of Ontario used to be special and now it's a frequently occuring thing. The sonner this gets fixed the better.

Didn't both TO and OTT vote to keep the schedule the same??
It sounds like they will vote on it again at the next GM meetings. I last heard that the lastest schedule was for each team to play everyone else at least once. So you would see the teams from the other side at least once every 2 years .
I stil llike the home and away with everyone each year. It would work.
If you are under the age of 15, please do some research before you make a post about anything pre-1997. |

As suggested earlier a balanced schedule where every team plays each other.
8 divisional games >>> 32 <<< 4 home and 4 away 2 conference games > 20 <<< home and home 2 opp. conf. games >> 30 <<< home and home Total >>>>>>>>>>>>> 82 <<<<
Then two changes...
1.) The Division winners just make the playoffs no matter what their record is (not top three as it is now).
2.) Add the new "NHL crossover" rule. Any team in the opposite Conference that has more points takes the place of the worst team in the other Conference, and is reseeded point wise in that Conference.
Below you see the 2006-07 standings, and then the new standings with the new rules applied.

I actually like that schedule. I still don't like 8 divisional games and would prefer it to be 4 games agains divisional opponents and 3 confrence games and 2 opposing confrence games. This would add one extra game but would make the hockey really interesting comming down to crunch time. The crossover idea is geneius though. It might get complicated at first but overall I think its a great idea.

Just think, back in the original six era teams played each other 14 times in one season, 6 teams a total of 70 games. Eight does not seem to be all that many now...
