I’ve been on this board for about a week, and I’ve seen a couple of recurring themes.
1. The same topics over and over. Who is the best player? Was Orr better than Gretzky? Who’s the best rookie? Etc. etc. etc.
2. Elitists who think they know everything there is to know about the sport. When someone makes a comment which they don’t like, they respond by saying “go do your research”.
I’ve decided to start a weekly thread, where I sound off on topics which are on my mind for that given week. These are topics which could be related to this site, current events in hockey, or just general hockey issues.
The purpose of these threads is to promote discussion, not to make anyone feel stupid. So I encourage everyone to post.
My first sound off is about the Elitists I spoke of above. I recently posted my thoughts on an existing thread. I received a response from a regular poster, who asked if I was 14 years old, because my comment made no sense to him. This isn’t the first time I had seen a response like this. Other times I’ve seen people tell others to go do their research, as if they were shocked to find that people don’t know as much about the rules, or stats as they do.
But isn’t this a great place to learn? Isn’t a forum meant to be a place for discussion, where experts and non-experts can come together and discuss things? Shouldn’t this forum be the medium for the research?
All you’re doing by making dumb comments like “If you are under the age of 15, please do some research before you make a post about anything pre-1997” is intimidating people. How about you let them post what they want, and then if you feel they are wrong, you can tell them why they are wrong.
These kinds of posts come from the same people who are proud of the number of posts they have accumulated over the years. Great accomplishment, you’ve reached 500 posts, or 1000 posts, Congratulations. My guess is you wouldn’t have reached that many posts if it hadn’t been for the posts where you told people to go do their research.
What have you really added to the discussion by telling someone to go do their research? If you are the Hockey Guru you claim to be, why don’t you tell me why I’m wrong, and save me some time.
In school we were taught that the only dumb question is the one that remains unasked. So don’t be afraid to speak up, even if your response may be out of left field.
Anyhow, I know I’ll take some heat from the Elitests I speak of regarding this post, but I just had to clear my mind.
Wings are used to fly, Leaves only fall.

There are no enemies here! We are all about hockey, right??
I do feel that I have to respond as I was quoted personally.
For the record, hkalirah, if you look back into these forums, you will see countless posts that are gibberish or information that is beyond inaccurate. Fact being, as you said, this is a forum to talk about hockey. The reason each of my posts says for people do their research is that I feel it takes away from the hockey discussion if there are always corrections needed to people's posts. Especially when you consider that the information is a google search away.
And I also do take a certain amount of personal offense to the negative connotations towards those you call the "elitists." There is a group of people who regularly post on here that are very knowledgeable about hockey. Not only that, some of the guys were around to see Orr, Howe and the likes play.(Didn't mean to make you feel old!!) Many other on here did not see Gretzky play or were very young. That being said, this group of people have shown to be more than willing to educate young or inexperienced hockey fans. Just take a look at the Forum where the guys wanted to know about Gretzky before he became a King. That is proof in the willingness of people to educate those who want the knowledge, and also proof of someone looking for knowledge, not just posting garbage.
However, in the same token, the people posting the gibberish are asking for a little heat. Nothing that should be personal, but in the end of the day, Myself and other on here want to talk about hockey, not clarify ever little stat or piece of info that could be found easily on the internet.
Finally, if you feel that you are being personally attacked in any thread, please contact Admin or a moderator. That is what we are here to do. It's our job to keep the talk about hockey and knock out the personal crap. I would also suggest reading the following forums on the guidelines to the forums. (Some others out there could use a refresher as well!!)

Hi Hkalirah. Thanks for your contribution. I can appreciate that the forums are a place for discussion and learning and we should try to encourage this and we will make every effort to maintain an environment where this can flourish. Having said that, we must understand that a forum is a place where many different ideas, cultures, knowledge levels and personalities converge, so from time to time a clash will happen. We all need to remember that, everyone here needs to treat each other with respect whether they agree or disagree and that is the bottom line!
I encourage you to sound off weekly but I have to also say that in the interests of practicing what you are preaching you are obligated to keep your rants about hockey.
Regarding some of the same topics popping up repeatedly in the forums I can tell you that it happens EVERY year at this time of year, as new members come in and the subjects become relevant again, and "passers through" pass through. The forums settle into a groove in November.
Thanks again for your thoughts and I am looking forward to your next hockey rant! |
