Kane is already a franchise player. That's mostly why I picked him. also, If somebody doesn't think he's already at that level, he definitely will be in the future.
Ellis or Mason?

You want proof Nash? Look at Chicago last year vs. this year.
That being said, they also have Toews, and guys are stepping up, i.e. Keith, Sharp and Lang. But yet, they have played well, we owe Kane a lot of the credit. A good solid first round draft choice.

I was refering to beans actually when he said only the top 30 players are franchise players. I agree, he did turn their franchise around.

I also like Price, but I think that Montreal will never really have a ''franchise player'' per say. People say that they would drop without Kovalev, but you know what, they are the deepest scoring team in the league, have stellar defense, a killer special teams..
It really is what it is called: a team.
I don't expect many ''franchise players,'' in the way we have come to understand the word, on Montreal.

Alex, you don't think that Price will be a frachise player. He is their best prospect and the best young, up-and-coming goalie. I think he can be said as the future, and as the franchise player of that team. Without a doubt. |

What Is The Definition Of A Fanchise Player? Can a star player such as Heatley be a franchise player. I thought a franchise guy would be somebody like Ovechkin, Crosby or Yzerman etc. A star player might be a Kovolev, Hossa or a Briere. Is there an actual definition somewhere or is it pure conjecture. I know Sundin is the Leaf's leader and best player but is he a franchise player by definition? |

While Sundin is a franchise player, Briere is not. You must be nearly synonomous with a franchise to be a franchise player.

The way I define a franchise player has nothing to do with the players association with a specific team. To me, a franchise player is firstly, one of the top players at their position in the league and could be argued as one of the top 20-30 players in the entire NHL.Secondly, they are a player that a team can be built around. He is the key piece of the puzzle that makes the team what they are.
For example, Roberto Luongo is a franchise player. He was a franchise player with Florida and became the franchise player in Vancouver immediately. Same with Joe Thornton when he left Beantown for the Sunshine State. I also think it's a misconception that a Franchise Player has to be young. Norris Nick Lidstrom is a franchise player and he's 38 years old. Alfredsson is a franchise player at 36 as well.
That being said, using my personal definition of a franchise player, I don't see a single player on this list a player I would build a team around. The closest thing would be Toews as I think the guy has a competative spirit that few have. Rarely is a draft pick or rookie a franchise player. In fact, in the past 20 years (Back to 1988) there are only 8-#1 draft picks I would have built a team around. That's a pretty poor number.
