Poll Question:
Is this year's Leafs team the most exciting Leafs team in the past 10 years?

For many years, I have been an avid Leaf hater. I have belittled the management, criticized the players and coaches, and mocked Leaf Nation. I felt that they were ruining hockey, simply with management taking the approach, "We are filling seats even while losing so no rush" with the players, "We are getting paid big money to do very little and there is no accountibility so why should we actually break up a sweat", and with Leaf Nation, "ya, our team sucks but we get so close every year. THIS will be the year so lets keep coming out to games and supporting our Leafs to the fullest." I still question some of the managerial decisions (Jeff Finger????? Jason Blake?????) but as I watch this team this year, there is something different about them. They are actually playing with heart and with energy! These kids love to play the game of hockey and are making the most of their time in the NHL. I am not a Leaf fan yet, but I can actually enjoy watching them play this year.

ThortonisTHEMAN you must be a true fan of the game to make this statement. I admire that because most people are as you say an avid hater or an avid fan. An avid hater never finds good in the leafs. I am myself an avid leaf fan, have been since I was old enough to watch the game. I have been so fustrated with the leafs since the lockout but never stopped being a fan. I would say that this is most exciting team in ten years because of many reasons. The first of which is the style of game they are playing, defensive positioning with a lightning quick transition. They are still working on this but it makes for exciting hockey, just ask wing fans or shark fans. The speed of this team is a thrill to watch. Another reason is the young players with potential star status. Luke Schenn should become a superstar defencemen similar to Pronger. Kulemin is showing signs of being a star, maybe not a superstar, but needs more time. Hopefully there is patience and proper development of these kids. Last reason i will give is that there is no superstar on this team, each player has to give everything each shift to prove he belongs. This results in players giving 100%, taking accountability, leaving it all on the ice by the end of the game or else they do not have a job. We have had lots to cheer about the last 10 yrs but nothing since the lockout. Now there is lots to be excited about.

its true i hate the leafs but they finally seem like they a little hop in there step sure they are making tons of mistakes but they are all so young so its fun to watch these kids who love hockey. there not just old wash up vets on there team this year. i think it be better if they never get sundin back even if he returns to play just will slow the building process of the team even tho the leadership would be appreciated

Funny you mention speed, Porkchop. Cuz I am a huge Sharks fan, and also love the Sabres and Capital style of hockey, all three based almost completely on speed. It's exciting hockey to watch and it's nice to see the Leafs implement it. |

i agree i find its the best hockey ive seen the leafs play in a long time. Its fun to watch even if they lose speed hits chances i think the people who voted no havent even watched the games remind me when daniel marois rick vaive gary leeman played. before eveveryone jumps on me im not saying they are the same it is just good hockey to watch stajan hitting guys who knew he was big and strong he didnt use his size before still wish blake would be at home or another team or colud play by himself he does any ways |

People who say no, are obvouisly not watching the leafs, 48 shots in a game against NJ, New jersey have been known for defence and they get 5 on them last night....against the Marty brodeur?! 39 the night before, believe me this leaf team is good. The leafs would be even scarier if they got a finisher like a Marain Gabroik.... |

I have to admit, SO FAR, the team has been exciting to watch. Not always pretty, but exciting.
Wilson has the kids fighting for ice-time and competing hard. It's the style of hockey that any real fan loves to see, and it's a shame we don't have a few more skilled players, then we'd be like the Oilers or Sabres or Philly in terms of excitement.
We're not there yet, but it's all a matter of perspective, really. When compared to the last ten years - yep, most exciting - SO FAR.

in the last 10 years..i would probably say 2001-2002 thats whne i first started to pay more attention hockey (i was in the first grade i think) i loved their team with CujJo in net, they had gary roberts, alex mogilny ,mats sundin ,steve thomas, danny markov, darcy tucker. alen mccauley. i dont know but maybe it was just because i was 6 but i thiought it was the most exciting year since 1998 is it now?

Gerry B....i HAVE FOLLOWED THE BLUE AND WHITE FOR ABOUT 68 YEARS SO i HAVE SEEN SOME OF THOSE GREAT TEAMS AND PLAYERS....THE SALMINGS THE KEONS AND THE HORTONS TO NAME ONLY A FEW BUT i ALSO REMEMBER THOSE HORRIBLE YEARS WHEN "LEAFS SUCK" WAS A REALITY. THIS CURRENT TEAM SHOWS SO MUCH PROMISE IT IS ALM,OST SCARY....DO WE IN FACT HAVE WHAT WE FANS HAVE BEEN CRYING FOR FOR SEVERAL YEARS....THE REALLY MOBILE GROUP WITH A STRONG DESIRE TO WIN....NEVER GIVE UP AND AND A GROUP THAT BUY INTO A SYSTEM AND ARE COACHABLE. I SEE SO MUCH TO HOPE FOR AND AM JUST CROSSING FINGERS ,TOES AND EVERYTHING ELSE THAT THIS TEAM IS FOR REAL AND CAN ONLY GET BETTER. |

I think they have definatly made the appropriate adjustments in order to move forward as a team, for example, getting some new young players; Nikolai Kulemin and Luke Schenn (among others). They have also accquired some veteren players, notably Curtis Joseph and Mike Van Ryn. So yes I believe this is the most exciting team I can remember in the last ten years or so, but there is still something missing...maybe a captain would be nice..

Well here we go again. The Leafs are barely hanging on to .500 hockey, score a few goals (but give up a lot too), can't win in overtime or a shoot out, keep getting behind early and have to fight to get back in the game and are pinning their hopes on a teenage defenseman (Benning and Gill anyone?) and everyone gets their hopes up. All I can say is that it's a LONG season, boys, and after a few more months of grinding out a win here and there the bounce will go out of their step. But that's a good thing, right? We want Tavares in next year's draft, don't we? |
