It is the essence of the free market system - supply and demand. The July 1st weekend has come and gone, and the supply of talent has dwindled. Demand for the remaining talent is high and the following remaining gems could be scooped up by the end of the week:

Forwards:

Anson Carter –and the Canucks are rumored to be $1 million apart, and the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown some interest. Can the Leafs afford to pay Carter the $3 million he is looking for, and still bring Gary Roberts back?

Mark Recchi – will probably return to Pittsburgh where he played most of last season.

Mike Peca – will most likely sign with an Eastern Conference team and could even return to either the New York Islanders or the Buffalo Sabres.

Jeremy Roenick – has stated he wants to play in Canada where hockey is number one. His personality would fit well in Ottawa where the Senators character is often criticized.

Sergei Samsonov – might be what the Blackhawks are looking for as they have made a number of offers to various players over the past few days, and still have yet to land a top six forward.

Brendan Shanahan – at 37 years old is still a 40 goal scorer and a point a game player. If Detroit doesn’t sign him then he could end up in Toronto or Montreal.

Defense:

Brian Leetch – is at the tail end of his career and could finish it off back in New York.

d*** Tarnstrom – put up some good numbers in Pittsburgh but was disappointing in Edmonton. Now that Pronger is gone – the Oilers may be willing to give him another shot.

Todd Simpson – may return to his hometown and play for the Canucks if the price is right.

Tom Poti – is a big strong defenseman with plenty of upside and the Senators are rumored to be interested as they need to fill the gap left by Chara.

Goaltenders:

Manny Legace – is one of the remaining goaltenders available via free agency and he could be on his way to LA or even St. Louis.

Dominik Hasek – is still one of the best in the game when he is healthy. His signing would be a big risk to any team – but at $1 million he is worth it.

Ed Belfour – see Dominik Hasek (above)

In the time it took to write this, Jeremy Roenick signed with Phoenix – so I guess that’s my cue.
