Here's the first.
Reported by TSN, Boston has offered RFA Phil Kessel and a draft pick (not in this years draft) for Thomas Kaberle.
In one hand, this deal seems one sided as Kaberle is under contract for 2 more years at a steal of $4.25 million. But when was the last time the Leafs had a young player with Kessels scoring ability??? Kessel's only 21 yrs old and is coming off a 36 goal, 60 points season.
I am thinking Burke is looking for a little more for a bonified top 2 defensemen. But also, thing of Boston with a defensive core of Chara, Wideman, Kaberle, Motidor, Hnidy. That's pretty sick.
Interesting. |

I have heard from someone who knows people in the Oilers management, that they are trying to trade up to Atlanta to get Kane or LA for Schenn. I think Kane epitomizes what the Oilers need, pure goals. Schenn is more two way, but who wouldn't want a hard-working Saskatchewan boy on their team?
I'm thinking Souray and Cogliano and maybe picks would suffice for a trade to happen (I'm biased, so I hope this is fair), and would like to see a deal get done, because the Oil really need a goal scorer to compliment the likes of Gagner and Hemsky. |

Pronger to Philly . . . crap, I think that means Briere is available! Very significant . . . but not really a big draft name involved.
Philly will look a lot more solid with him on the blueline . . . I am not a big Philly fan, so this makes me wince a bit. Hopefully Pronger starts playing stupid again and constantly taking bad penalties . . .

Don't worry, nobody is going to take on Briere and his contract, unless it is to their benefit. Philly'll have to do what NJ did when they were over the cap, trade Briere and a pick for nothing to a cap rich team like LA or Minny.
Like the Pronger deal. With that D line up and the forwards in place, they are scary good. Malkin, Sid, Ovie, watch yourself. Now if Emery regains his form and focus, Philly is going to go far. If not Pronger will just kick his buttocks back to Russia. |

I think the best moves in the draft were made by the Islanders. No real surprise that they picked Tavares but the trade of picks to get Calvin DeHaan was another great move. A teamate of Tavares when he was in Oshawa the youngster could be a big stud on the blueline if turns out like a Chris Pronger as projected. Islanders may have some good future for their fans. No other real shockers here. I like the small kid that the 'nucks picked up, Jordan Schroeder. And I think the Oil got a good feisty swede Svensson. I think he has the potential to be similar to Forsberg.

I like that Burke picked Kadri, even though he had been projected a little bit lower . . . he was certainly the most talented player available. Lots of potential, at any rate, which is all you can expect.
Doubly awesome was the TSN broadcast of Burke's conversation with his Ottawa counterpart, who he spoke to just before picking . . .
Burke - "So, who do you like?" "Well, we'd like Kadri" Burke - "Well, that's who we're picking"

I am absolutely shocked that Edmonton picked up Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson. Dude played in the Swedish Elite League as a 17 yrd old. Many touted him at the start of the year as 4th or 5th over all. A nice steal at #10 without having to trade up.
And, I am a little surprised that Burke took Kadri. Not because he's weak by any strech. Burke is just not know to put much faith in smaller players. Kardi is pretty small at 6' - 167 lbs for an NHL. Hopefully the kid can toss 20-25 lbs on in the next 24 months.
Very interesting draft. Surprised that Anaheim sent Pronger for really a bag of chips. It tells me there is something else in the works for Anahiem. |

I was suprised by trading up from 16 to 12 to get Calvin...he was projected to go after the 16th pick anyway....i thought for sure they were trading up to get khulikov.

didnt mean for my comment to show up in the "quote" as well, but de Haan is 6'0 170 so he is no where Pronger size, he did put up good points most of which were when he played with tavares, but i believe he was projected to go in the late 20's so taken him 12th was suprising. |

HAHA if there was a Defencemen projected to be equal to Pronger he would of went 1st 2nd or third!!!!! Maybe a way worse version of Pronger at that projected time he was to go in the draft and a guy whos only your third D or something but not a franchise player or else he would be way higher and Pronger is a franchise player. (Leafs Fans Nazem Kadri isnt.) (JT and Hedman, possibly Duchene are projected future franchise players.)
Iginla for 2010 team captain. Flames for cup...eventually. |

Even stood beside some scouts from the NHL who literally said the kid, by the time he matures, could be a Pronger like defenseman. Sure he is not as tall as Pronger nor is he as big but he is only 18 yrs old. It is not the size that is being compared but the style of play. He just is not a far along as Pronger was at 18 but has the potential to develop that way. Very similar style of play but whether he can parlay that into the NHL is different story. I am scouring for an article I read about him awhile back, I can't remember what paper or journal it is in but I will find it and post a link for you (hopefully) to back up my statement. But if you want to laugh at my statement then go ahead, I personally never know how a pick is going to turn out. Look at Zetterburg, he had strong comparisons to Adam Graves, or Glenn Anderson, even Doug Gilmour. People laughed and said he will never develop into that type of scorer he was too defensive. Picked 210th overall. Now he's considered one of the best (maybe the best) two way players today. Anyways I think was good move on the Isle part to take the chance and bring someone who is a good friend of Tavares. Tavares is going to be expected to turn the Isle around even if Charles Wang says they will not put that pressure on him. The media will. It will help to have someone with him that he knows. Who knows DeHaan could flop and never play a game in the NHL. |

Two things I didn't like in the draft
1.) Dallas with their 8th overall pick selects Scott Glennie. In my opinion a terrible move with Cowen, Paarjavi Svensson, Kulikov, and Ellis still available 2.) Kulikov going fourteenth overall Great steal for Panthers that's all I have to say
You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take Wayne Gretzky |
