Will he crack the Leafs roster?

There is no doubt that Allison has offensive skills that would benefit the Leafs. The issue I see with him is that I have better skating skills. He's slow, plain and simple and lack of speed in today's game is difficult to over come.
But, he was a PPG player for years and had a couple of 80+ point seasons. If he can even find 50 points in himself, that's a benefit to any team.

I think you have to add a "maybe, if he's worked on skating" answer.
I mean he had 60pts in 66 games his last go around, and sure you didn't need slow motion to watch the replay, but thats a good p/gm by anyone's standards.
With the leafs offence as it stands there's no harm in seeing what he's done to better his game in the last couple years. |

Well, the reason he left the game wasn't because of his skating - it was because he had concussion problems - dizziness, headaches, etc.
If he has passed physicals and is good to go, there is no reason why he couldn't play again at a pretty high level. Would love to see this formerly genuine first-liner do well for the Leafers!
I'll have to look into this though, first I heard of it.

He is only 34, but he has only played 1 season since 2002-2003. I can't see how he could still be in shape... he must be training like a beast if he thinks he can just come back to the NHL.
I also can't see how all of a sudden he won't be as slow as he was before... he's probably even slower..
Burke must have some sort of hunch, or he was up drinking the night before and said "f*** it, this'll give Damian Cox something to bitch about".
My biggest problem with this is the fact that we already have a glut of centres and this would mean that either kids like Mitchell and Bozak won't get the ice time they need to develop or a guy like Stajan is on his way out. I guess how camp goes will determine all of that.
I'd like him on the PP, but 5 on 5 he seems like a liability. While many may look at the 60 pts in 66 games and say "not bad" he was absolutley brutal in his own end and was responsible for just as many goals against if not more, than he helped create. Not to mention he slowed the leafs attack 5 on 5 to a crawl.
I dont think its a good idea myself... let the kids play and keep looking to acquire some help that is quicker, younger and has more potential.

| He has no contract so no harm done having him at camp. He must be in good enough shape to convince them to give him a shot... No harm done either way. |

but yea, like justin said, its just a tryout and if he makes the squad that must mean he is in good shape and is ready to rock.. if he doesn't than the leafs haven't lost anything. Its not like he is costing us picks or prospects like the days of the Nolan and Leetch trades...
still, I find it to be a bit of a stretch that he is on the opening night roster...

Even if it is a strech, it's completely consequence free. If he tanks in training camp, no harm/no foul. If he plays well, it will be a very small and very short term contract (maybe $1 million for 1 season). If he is anywhere near his former form(PPG) it will be a complete steal for the Leafs and provide them with their only legitimate, 1st line player on a forward roster full of pluggers, grinders, and middle of the road offensive players.
Nothing to lose everything to gain for the Leafs. |

I think most leaf fans react the same way to this announcement. The guy cannot skate good enough to compete in todays game. But a tryout is only a tryout and like Beans says, if the guy can somehow demonstrate enough ability, hes a steal.
I am not holding out any hope for this though. |

He will probably spend some time in the Marlies and get a few call ups.
Maybe next season if he stays healthy. |

I always like Allison, so, personally I hope that he is able to stick with the team. They could use some additional veteran leadership. Who knows, maybe he actually learned how to skate in the last 3 years. |
