Poll Question:
Similar to phillyfan12's poll but who do you think will do the best in the western conference?

San Hose Sharks I picked because they have alot of fairly good players and a great goalie. Plays smart with the puck and moves it well too.

well if u take one look at my name i'll bet u can guess what team im going to say. yup, the san jose sharks. with the heatley pick up i dont see how joe thornton wont be able to reach 100 point form. heatley should get at least 40 goals. if nabokov can play consistent then they have a great goalie. also if that second line (which was one of the best 2nd lines in the league statistically) then they'll have one of the best top 2 lines in the league. although they drop michalek who was on that 2nd line, because of heatley being on that first line either marleau or setoguchi will drop down to the 2nd line. regardless that 2nd line should be awesome |

I gotta go with the historical favorite for the last 10ish years give or take. Detroit. I dont care who they bring in and who they lose this team is the most disciplined team in the west with the best 2 way forwards throughout the line up and most veteran defense. Forget the fact the Osgood is a middlepack goalie during the year, this team does not give up shots and scoring is frequent and by committee. |

Vancouver will challenge for top spot this year, but the favourites have to be San Jose |

This is even tougher than than the eastern conference in my mind. I went off the grid a bit, and decided to pick . . . Chicago.
But it could just as easily be the sexy pick San Jose; could be perennial winner Detroit; could even be Calgary, Anaheim, Vancouver.
This is part of the reason I see very close to a five way tie in the west, and a similar situation as last season with playoff spots coming down to the last game.

If this is for regular season I voted for San Jose. I believe they will rack up victories against Phoenix, LA and Dallas. Even though LA and Dallas could be pretty good this year.
For the playoffs I would go for Detroit or Calgary. |

I'm going with the Sharks...They have a bad reputation that they need to get rid of and they have the talent to do it with. Thornton and Heatley will be dynamite, Nabby will be terrific, and they have a very solid core of second depth scoring. The only worry is if Nabby goes down for an extended period of time. But I see San Jose repeating as President Cup winners. |

The wording of this topic makes it a little confusing. Reason being, who is the highest in the standings in the West and who does the best in the West is often 2 different things.
Personally, I think San Jose is going to be very tough to be in the regular season. However, like Slozo's pick for Chicago as going the deepest in the playoffs and perhaps winning the Cup. |

Yeah they buildin on but San Hose right now has more skill. In the meantime the Ducks might take it all.

I really think that Anaheim will compete for the top spot in the West. I think it will come down to Anaheim and Detroit in a battle for first, and San Jose and Chicago in a battle for fourth.
I also wouldn't be surprised if St. Louis is up there, especially if Kariya, Brewer, and McDonald can stay healthy. Berglund, Backes, Perron, and Oshie are all improving and give the Blues great depth upfront. |

I think San Jose and Detroit will have a battle for 1st and Anaheim and Chicago will have a battle for 3rd. The blues might sneak into 5th though.

I think Anaheim is still a playoff team. However, I don't see how a team that did not compete for the top seed in the West last season is going to this season after losing Pronger, Beauchemin and picking up Kouvi and Lupul. Boynton is a nice pick up and so was Whitney last year but neither of them are Pronger and niether are as physical as Beauchemin. Anaheim's toughness on the backend, one of their trademarks of the past 3-5 years is not what it used to be. Plus, Giguere is shaken after losing his #1 job. As good as Hillar did last season he's still pretty young and may pull a sophmore slump a la Cary Price.
Let's not forget that the entire 3rd line from the Cup team (Moen, R. Neidermayer, and Pahlsson) is gone. Many think they were the biggest reason the Ducks won the Cup and many also think the lack of these guys was the downfall of the Ducks against Detroit this past playoffs.
They simply are not as good of a team as last year. Better offensive support with a better 2nd line. Not as good on the back end and not as good at the 3rd lines. Question marks in net. They will be a middle of the road playoff team. But, once they get to the playoffs, they usually make noise. |

Wow good anylisis Beans and you are right about the third line of Pahlson, Moen and Niedermayer being gone. That's gonna hurt them. The rise of Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan will put them in the playoffs.
All right here's my take of the playoff teams in the west.
1. San Jose 2. Detroit 3. Calgary 4. Chicago 5. Vancouver 6. Anaheim 7. Dallas 8. Edmonton
I could very well see St Louis instead of Dallas or Edmonton. |

Calgary adding J-bo, and Jokinen getting comfortable playing with Iginla, the Flames are going to be hard to beat this year. |

I think the flames will pretty much do as good as last year because Cammaleri got sighned with Montreal and Jokinen replacing him so the team is just as good as last year.

I've change my mind. Detroit has lost too many pieces. I'm figuring on San Jose/Calgary this year in the regular season and on Anaheim in the post season when it really counts. |

On paper, the best team is San Jose... But as an Oiler fan, even I'll admit that based on form on these first games Calgary is the team to beat, but not for long.
(Phx won't hold its wins for very long, Detroit will pick up eventually, Luongo will eventually start playing again, San Jose will start steam rolling, and Anaheim will be a thorn in the flesh. Dallas, I'm just not familiar enough with. Edmonton needs consistency, to learn a new system after 8 years of the MacT Method. Columbus will be fun to watch, Chicago will get going too.) |
