I was just browsing one of my new favorite hockey websites (besides this one, of course) when I went to check out the O2 Extraliga (Czech Republic's top hockey league) and I noticed Petr Nedved on the points leader board (Ranked tied-33rd)

This was not the interesting part...

This web site had Petr Nedved as listed as part of Team Canada in Internation play for two seperate tournaments in 1993-1994.

Is this an error, or actually true? Did Nedved play for Canada and win Silver with them in 93/94? Or is it simply a mistake in the statistics?

Yeah, I actually remember Nedved playing for Canada . . . sigh.

You all must be too young, 'cause I don't feel that old!

Nedved was in Edmonton later on in his career. Early on, he was with Vancouver. Then he moved to the East coast where I beleive his wife is from.

I barely recall Nedved with team Canada, so I must be in between old and young???

Well if I remember correctly Nedved came out to play in the Macs AAA Midget tournament they have in Calgary every Christmas and never went home. He was 15 at the time and had to live with a host family and because it was illegal to move from his country at the time had to get citizenship in Canada. My memory is a little fuzzy on this but it happened along those line anyway.

I found that he defected from the at the time Communist ruled Czechoslovakia in 1989 when he was 17. And it was when the Czech team was here for the Mac Tourney in Calgary.

Not sure the rules of defecting, but I believe you renounce your citizenship at that time. However, it was only in 94 when Nedved was holding out that he got his Citizenship. He then went to play for Team Canada at the Olympics in 94. That's interesting as at that time there was still no pro's in the Olympics so I don't get how Nedved got to play.

Ya learn a little something every day I guess.

He played on a line with Paul Karyia in Lilehammer. I think because he was unsigned at the time of the Olympics he was eligble to play, not really sure how the IOC rules worked back then but that would be my guess
