I think the signings fully depend on how far SJ goes in the playoffs. Another first round bust would alter those plans slightly.

Awwww, Beans! I was just about to tell JJR to make sure his punctuation was correct and use a "?" when needed! Then you go pull the forum rules! Darn!

Personally, i think the Sharks will explore the options on a new goalie IF Nabby can't find his groove this year when it counts. Marleau has had an impressive year and i think they'll try to keep him. I'm not too up on SJ's farm system, any prospects between the pipes there??

Why would any team want to drop a goalie who has a 129-49-26 record over the past 3 seasons with a save % better than .910 and a GAA under 2.50???

I mean, take away the name, those are elite, top 5 in the league numbers.

And say what you will about the Sharks in the playoffs, there are very few series you could look back on(if any at all) where Nabakov was the reason the Sharks lost.

If the Sharks don't want Nabokov, he will be paid very handsomely by another team.

Beans, i agree that Nabby's been solid for years, but it's no different than the situation in Calgary where no on in their right mind would think they'd ever even consider trading Iginla, but it could happen! Sometimes, a change has to be made to the core in an attempt to shake things up. I'm not saying that SJ will give up on Nabby but with what he'll likely end up asking for may be to a point where they decide to cut ties with him? I'm not saying i agree with it either, i'd have to see the dollar amounts involved!

An aging Russian goaltender on the downswing of his career?

Sounds like he'd be a better fit on the Oilers.

How the Sharks perform in the playoffs is going to be a huge factor in the signing of these two players. I voted Nabby only but I'm thinking they may not have the cap space to fit them both. If you go to NHL Numbers.com @ http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=SJS&season=0910 they only have $839,000 in cap space this year. The Sharks have 12 UFA's and 5 RFA's to deal with this year so it depends what they plan on doing with those guys. Does anyone think that Rob Blake will retire this year? At 40 years old he's having his best year since 05/06 but if he does that frees up 3.5 million. If they don't keep Nabby I think the Sharks are going to have to decide if they keep Marleau or Thornton as Big Joe is a UFA next year.

When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too.

SJ doesn't want to drop him per say - they just may not be able to afford him.

SJ has 20.5M in cap space for next year, and has to sign 10 players. If they devote 7M to Marleau (he will get it) how much can they then devote to Nabokov? He's going to command 6-7M per year on the market. He may take a hometown discount, or they may craft a lifetime contract for him that is front heavy. But if his cap hit is, say 5.5/year, that is 12.5M to 2 contracts. Other notables that they have to sign this year:

- Pavelski - made 1.6 last year, I can't see him signing for less than 3 per year
- Setoguchi - coming off his entry level deal, probably 1.5-2 per year
- the entire 4th line (Maholtra, Nichol, Ortmeyer). Combined, 2.5/year
- another dman to replace Blake (assuming he will retire) - I'm guessing they'll want someone else who can provide offense to help Boyle, so I'm thinking 2.5/year.

To sign them all will take 22.5M, using my numbers. I don't think they can do it. Keeping a high powered top line, a premier dman, and a premier goalie is hard to do in the cap world. The big 5 (Thornton/Heatly/Marlea), Boyle, and Nabokov would take up nearly 35M of their cap space.

A team like SJ, perhaps they can afford to go cheaper in goal and save some money there. Maybe make a run at Halak, or Turco in his waning years, or the Monster as an RFA. They have options - after the top big names there is a glut of reliable and cheap goalie options either by trade or free agency.

Am I way off, or does 7MM/yr seem like overpaying for Nabokov, given the market?

Edit: Wait, are you talking about 7MM/yr for Marleau and closer to 5 for Nabokov? Even 5 might be pushing it, depending on the length of the contract.

I agree nuxfan. Keeping both is going to be difficult, but something they have to do in my opinion.

I can see Marleau and Nabakov both taking slight discounts, to continue to play on a dominate team. Both are aging, and it may be their best chance at a cup. They can't predict which team they'll go to, if they leave San Jose. They can narrow it down to a degree as UFA, but they also know it depends on teams willing. So if they want to stay on a winner (atleast regular season thus far), staying in San Jose is the best choice. And both are well established there, living and family wise.

I can see Marleau taking the $6.0-6.5 M range, per year. If they can work that to a $5Mil cap hit, kudos to them.

Patrick is only 29 years of age. They can attempt to sign him long term, if they do see him as a fit there for a long stint. They could offer him something like....

5 Years -- $7.5, $7.5, $6.0, $5.0, $4.0 (Total: $30 Mil or $6M per year)

Their cap hit, then becomes $6Mil per year. Over what they'd like, but fair for both parties in my opinion.

As for Nabby, he is the guy they keep for certain. Even if it is at the cost of Marleau. It's hard to find a goaltender of his skill, in the open market. You can find guys like a Halak, sure. But not a Nabakov. Teams keep these guys, for as long as they can.

I can see Nabby making $5-6Mil per year. Roughly the same numbers he makes now. At 33, perhaps locking him to a long term (retirement age) deal isn't a terrible idea for them. And by doing so, I'm sure they can work out something that saves them in cap.

It is possible for them to keep both, if they go to a long term deal for both. 5 Years each, maybe 7 for Nabby. And, if they feel they can not keep both, then I believe Nabakov stays.

Irvine/prez.

@nuxfan:

Isn't Nabokov 34? I've got him as a July birthday in 1975.

Speaking of which, when does his 'signing a contract over the age of 35' CBA condition kick in?

signing Marleau to a 7 year deal would be absolutely ridiculous! i agree that the season he's had this year deserves a reward via an extension. but signing a guy who's as inconsistent from season to season as Marleau is, would be just plain foolish........ESPECIALLY if the team craps out in the playoffs again this year. i'd offer him 3 - 4 years tops.

Marleau wants to stay. No doubt about it. And who in their right mind would not want Marleau long term, especially in SJ???

What wrong with the SJ management giving Marleau a 12 year deal with $58 million??? It would be a cap hit of $4.8 million but would front load and pay something like

$8 million for 4 seasons
$6 million for 2 seasons
$4 million for 2 seasons
$2 million for 2 seasons
$1 million for 2 seasons

He would be around 38 in the time the contract is in the buy out range.

Then, Nabokov gets a 2-3 year-$12-$18 million dollar deal.

That would actually save San Jose $875,000 over this year that they can use to sign their first round pick.

Rob Blake won't be back, so you can use that $3.5 million to resign Pavelski and Pavelski's $1.7 million contract goes to Setaguchi.

Who cares about the rest of the UFA's with the exception of MAYBE Wallin, the rest are easily replaced for the same kind of money. All you gotta do is move up Vlasic or Murray to the #2 d man spot and find a guy to swallow up some minutes in the 4,5,6 spot.

Done.

And next year, you give Big Joe a contract that will average about a mill or 2 more a year than Marleau(which would save SJ another $1-3 million a season comparatively).

well, unfortunately, SJ does. They have to field a full team - whether or not it is signing those UFA's or signing other UFA's to do it, they have to do it. I don't know much about SJ, but that 4th line seems to be pretty effective whenever they play VAN. Perhaps they can fill a 4th line for 2M, instead of my 2.5 estimate.

Beans and Irvine: I agree with you both, the only way that SJ can do this is to sign both to cap-friendly lifetime deals (a la Luongo/Hossa/Pronger), that keeps the cap hit low but gets them their money. If I were them I'd take advantage of it now too, as I expect that loophole to be closed by ownership in the next CBA.

However, if SJ does go out in round 1 again this year, I think we'll see a bigger change in SJ this summer.
