Canada has teams in 6 of its major cities, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, and Vancouver, and used to have teams in Winnipeg and Quebec City and now the Pens might be going to Winnipeg. My question is, what ever happened to Saskatoon? How come there haven't been any teams there? Saskachewan is one of the larger provinces, how come they don't have a team? My friend from Calgary says Saskatoon is "in the middle of nowhere"; is the reason they have no teams because no one lives there? LOL (joking)
I look forward to some answers, eh

OK, thanks for the info Canucks Man

BTW, there is this "Biology Olympiad" thing going on for high school students (I signed up for it) and the international finals are being held in Saskatoon. So if I'm good enough at biology I'll get to go to the middle of nowhere to compete, lol

Saskatoon is a pretty small place, relatively speaking. It has about 250,000 people. It is a bigtime hockey town but couldn't sustain an NHL franchise. And as others have mentioned above there aren't any other major centers in the general region. The total population of Saskatchewan is only about 1 million (I was born in Sask )

Isn't Winnipeg in Manitoba? Or did you mean you live in the neighboring province to Saskachewan?

It has nothing to do with the fact that they aren't close to any other major city geographically. As Leigh said, the city is only around 250 000 people. It's just not big enough to support a team.

don't know if anybody remember that, around 1983 or so, the St. Louis Blues passed close moving in Saskatoon....

Quoting the St.Louis Blues web site (http://www.stlouisblues.com/history/history.html):

quote:
The Blues finished eight games under .500 in 1981-82 and slid to 65 points the following season, the fourth-lowest total in club history. Berenson got canned, Dean retired and Ralston Purina soon lost interest in hockey. Citing losses of $1.8 million per year, the company put the team up for sale. When the league blocked the sale of the Blues to Saskatoon interests in 1983, the company padlocked the Checkerdome and left the franchise on the NHL's doorstep. The Blues, with their ownership unresolved, did not participate in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.

Enter entrepreneur Harry Ornest, who bought the franchise off the scrap heap. He, new general manager Ron Caron and coach Jacques Demers quickly made the Blues profitable and competitive.

I really don't think that Saskatoon or Regina can maintain an healty NHL team in the 2000's. Winnipeg: maybe, Quebec City/Hamilton: not sure, Halifax/Saskatoon/Regina: not at all.

Saskatoon i think would be a great idea. The roughrider fans are the best in the league(there cfl team) and plus there is nothing to do there.

I think hamilton would get a team before saskatoon, since saskatchewan is the biggest joke ever......I'm not gonna slam manitoba that badly, since they produced 2 of canada's most legendary physicists (whom I had the luxury of learning from hahahahah)...But I don't think those 2 provinces have the business community required to have an NHL team...As bettman said (he's a joke, but what he said makes sense), it's not just selling tickets that works, you need to have enough local business's to support a team.....

But what I REALLY wanted to add was the CFL is the BIGGEST JOKE buddy....I hate that f***ing "grey cup fever".......The CFL is like the ECHL(east coast hockey league) of Football, sure sometimes someone breaks through (Garcia), but do you have any idea how much worse CFL players are than NFLers...Casey Printers was the CFL mvp a few years back, then he tried out down south and is a 4th stringer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't care about the CFL as much, but a lot of retarded Canadians don't understand how much WORSE those players are compared to the NFL guys...And then CFL highlights are the first on Sportscenter? What a f***ing joke........Then the lions won the grey cup, and all I'd see on the COVER of newspapers was lions this and lions that......WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sure that's news....but a B-league football association should NEVER be front page news (nor take priorities over hockey on sportscenter).

Dude, obviously the CFL doesn't have the talent that the NFL has, nor does it have the fanbase or even a fraction of the economic strength. It does not exist to compete with the NFL either. It's a different league in a different country. MLS doesn't have near the same talent that the English Premiership has but does that mean that it's a joke? It's entertainment man, these football players are still very talented and I've been to many of their games when I lived in Winnipeg and cheered them on like I would any other hometown team. It's also just another business with people on the other end trying to make a living.

The premise of Saskatchewan hosting any major sport is truly absurd. They are way down on the list, after Winnipeg, Hamilton, Quebec City and Halifax (at least). If the NHL hits 75 teams, Saskatoon might get lucky.

You forgot this, '4943: Running an hockey team in the NHL is a business thing, not something for keeping people occupied during the long canadian winter.

I'm pretty sure Saskatoon doesn't have enough major companies to support a NHL team, and enough people able to pay 150-200$ per game to assist to the 41 home games. That is it, buddy.

For me, this case is closed!

You've all nailed it. In short, Saskatoon may be able to sell out every single seat ticket in the arena, but there is no way it could sell luxury boxes - which are all the rave amongst NHL owners - nor could it generate a large enough TV contract to make it worthwhile. Not to mention advertising and promotions.
These are the main reasons the Jets had to leave Winnipeg, despite having the best hockey fans in North America. Unfortunately, in the new NHL, fans don't equal money.
However, Saskatoon would actually probably land an NHL team before Hamilton could. Reason being, owning an NHL teams affords you certain rights, one of them being the right to veto any new team within a large radius, something like 200 miles. Obviously, that's a general rule and certain conditions apply in the case of New York, L.A. etc. but the fact is, the Toronto Maple Leafs AND the Buffalo Sabres would have to surrender those rights before Hamilton could be granted a team. It seem unlikely that both teams would be willing to give up a healthy chuck of their fan base.

It's in Ontario...I know someone who lives there and he said not many people have heard of it. Guess it definitely can't support a team then...(At least people have heard of Saskatoon, lol)

I' pretty dissapointed none of you guys know about mississaugas .....

They have a OHL team (the ice dogs) owned by the one and only Don Cherry...He coached them a few years back too....You "Canadian Hockey fans" should be ashamed of yourselves......Don Cherry mentions that city like, every other coaches corner.

Well one of those guys is 13 so I could cut him some slack but I'm 18 and I've known of Mississauga for quite a few years. I mean watch one week's worth of news on TV and you should be quite familiar with Mississauga by then. Watch HNIC and they'll mention it at some point...

Props to you Mik. I've talked to 17 year old girls in Florida before (long story) and the only two Canadian cities they could think of were Toronto and Montreal. Yep, nothing about even Vancouver. They also thought our Prime Minister was that dude with the funny face (still while Stephen Harper was PM). Nice to know you aren't all like that. Plus, I won't even lie, I don't know much about Maryland

LOL there isn't much to know about Maryland, it's such a small state. Snowy on the west, too humid on the east. Chesapeake Bay up the middle. Famous for blue crabs. Also the only state where Ebola viruses are kept (at Ft. Detrick). That's about it, lol

And wow, they couldn't even name Ottawa? Man...

What about Dartmouth? Could they support a team?

You all want more teams in Canada but all the other cities don't seem capable of sustaining teams (except Winnipeg). Saskatoon, Halifax, Regina, Quebec City...from what I've heard here they couldn't do it. And Mississauga's too close to Toronto I guess. What's the deal here? Surely Canada can sustain teams based on fan attendance. Someone here said Canadians account for 1/3 of all NHL revenue! Eh??

Dartmouth is part of the Halifax Regional Municipality. It accounts for about 100,000 of HRM's (approx.) 350,000 people. That's where I live. If Halifax can't support an NHL team, then Dartmouth surely couldn't.

In case anyone was wondering, Cole Harbour, where Sidney is from, is also part of the HRM. It's just another community and in minor hockey, Dartmouth-Cole Harbour is the local Toronto-Montreal rivalry. It's because they always play each in the first round of provincial qualifying

Ahh, I wondered about that. I thought Cole Harbor and Halifax were close to Dartmouth, but I had no idea the were part of the Halifax Regional Principality (I had no idea there was such a thing!) Guess they couldn't all have their own teams then, too close.

I'll come up with a Canadian city that can support and have a team without being rivalled by its neighbors, just wait!

You mean MUNIcipality?

Halifax is just across a bridge from Dartmouth (Laval-Ottawa style) and Cole Harbour/Dartmouth are just separated by a street.

No, its not just a rivalry and not just us (Cole Harbour). Its bad, bad blood. It is just sicking to play aganist them. Every team hates to play against them and there refs suck really bad. Because of this, the Dartmouth players are playing the game extreamly dirty and have the mouths worse then a truck driver. Your team Babs probably not this bad but on many occasions there has been complaints about Dartmouth. Sorry about this rant but something needs to be done.

it's possible, but i think a better idea would be for a whole province like manitoba, saskatchewan, or even in the maritimes to have their own team. If the whole province paid for the arena etc..it could work. Kinda like the Avalanche in Colorado.
