Just watching CBC news after the game, and the headline (and direction of the "news") is that a riot is taking place in riot.
I'm not trying to downplay what's taking place (which at the present time is one burning car, shown repeatedly, and a few unruly people), but this is nowhere near what the media is making it out to be!
I sure hope it doesn't get of hand, but to this point (from what I've seen the last hour), it's another example of the media blowing things out of proportion.

well, I thought it would take a little while to forget about the game tonight....but look at that, a riot to make the game suddenly seem meaningless. It looks to be well out of hand by now, just sad and embarrassing. |

No dude, there is a full blown riot downtown. It's not media hype. It's very sad and as a Vancouverite I'm very embarrassed. |

As an Edmontonian who happened to be in Vancouver for the final game and made his way downtown to see what the hype would be like, it doesn't seem to be true Canuck fans rioting, which I'm sure really doesn't surprise anyone. Thousands of bandwagon jumping fans (based strictly on appearance and judged solely by me) making their way downtown that really didn't care what the outcome was going to be. I actually think it would have been worse if they had won, because the people who took off early may have got caught up in the moment and joined in all the drunken debauchery taking place. It made Whyte Ave in Edmonton '06 look pretty tame. |

Honestly, I am super embarrassed about this. That being said, news reports are apparently saying that people were throwing around Molotov cocktails... I'm not presuming to know what goes on in these idiots' heads, but I'd say that they went downtown for the sole purpose of causing violence and destruction, = not concerned with the game and not real fans. On behalf of the entire city, I'd say we're looking at the couple hundred people in the streets who are creating all of these problems, that we are shaking our heads at the sight of us. People are throwing garbage at police... most of these people are drunk and just looking for an excuse to make trouble. I am consistently amazed at the number of morons in the world, and am ashamed to see so many in my beloved city
Although I have to say, the worst people are the ones who stand around and take pictures and laugh like it's some kind of joke. It's just plain sad. The later it got, the less it became about the Cup loss and te more it was about a bunch of peabrains looking for an excuse to set things on fire and yell expletives in the middle of the street because for some reason, that's their idea of a pleasurable experience.
Whatever. |

It's unfortunate becase 95% of this was incited by about 2% of the people down there. I am sure there was some mob mentality going on and the crowd as cheering some of that stuff on, but that is no excuse.
Fortunately, most of these meatballs are not the best and brightest that Vancouver has to offer. As such, the police have various social media sites to surf through and find the countless pictures of exactly who these guys were and they will be treated appropriately by Vancouvers Finest. |

Sad to see, unfortunately I sorta knew something would happen - win or lose - when I saw that huge 100,000 + people crowd out there on the streets before the game. That was a whole lot of people, and you just knew something would go down.
Not to slag the city of Vancouver - I like that city, myself - but it is the "bum" capital of Canada, and there are lots of idle bums and panhandlers about, so it's probably more of that element than true fans of the game of hockey.
Tough loss at home, and an even tougher sight to see this morning.
Sometimes ya gotta take your lumps before touching glory, and right now, Vancouver is definitely getting their lumps.

Sort of hard to believe when you clearly see Vancouver jerseys on some of the people right at the heart of the garbage.
Whatever the case, it is an utter embarrassment and black stain. Again. |

There's no excuse for this ridiculous behaviour and i really hope those who are identified, don't just get off with a slap on the wrist!
It really is a shame as there were prob less than 100 idiots actually causing the problems and another few hundred who jumped on board in their drunkeness. Many of the others were simply watching, which really doesn't help the situation! But it's the 100 or so who chose to hide behind masks and balaclav's and bring molotov cocktails to the party who are really to blame. That, is what people mean when they say "it wasn't the true Canucks fans".
I don't feel the need to defend the true fans as this sort of thing is not isolated to Vancouver and a lot of other cities have had similar things occur. Never will i say that ALL Canucks fans are good, well behaved, etc as that's never gonna happen. But to read all the classless comments i hear from the haters (not on here YET but on all sorts of news and sports sites i've visited today) saying that it's "typical Canucks fans" and things like that makes my blood boil!!

Actually Slozo it wasn't the "bums" as you put it. In fact in the news footage you could see a lot of the characters with bags full of cans just picking things up. This was primarily a group of 18 to 25 year old men who were more interested in creating their own "94". Many of them had HAMMERS. If you bring a hammer downtown for this you sure didn't intend on building a church. Obviously when you add alcohal and drugs to the mix you incite a few others (who wouldn't normally partake) to join in.
On my way to work this morning I did see a ton of volunteers walking the streets picking up garbage and debris. That part makes me proud. The riot on the other hand....well not so much.
And to Guest0255, this was not a city that caused this, it was a select few. Pease do not lump the 99.999 percent of this city in with your statements. |

Fair enough, Leigh. You cracked me up with the "bring the hammers to build a church" comment, funny stuff. No, I agree wholeheartedly, from the clips that I have now seen . . . I only saw a very few "derelict" types, as you say, it was the twenty-something crowd from the burbs, it seems.
Disaffected youth and all that crap. I blame it on tv and video game violence.
They sure weren't smoking the "relaxing stuff" last night, must have been something else. As you say Leigh, it is a select few who incite and create, but of note, within a huge mob, there are always a bunch who join in who didn't plan on doing anything like that, at least, not conciously. Those are the ones that really get my goat . . . the ones who see a couple of hoodlums breaking a store window, and they decide to join in since "everyone's doing it". They need a good hard kick in the arse.
Sadly, the obligatory response will be more downtown surveillance cameras, less public privacy and more rights infringement, and of course, more wasted tax dollars. But I'll stop right there with the non-hockey commentary!

Def not "bums". Slozo, you are right though, we are definitely the "bum capital of Canada" without a doubt! The thing is, your problem often becomes our problem (not just TO, but a lot of other Candian cities). You see, our mild winters here actually allow these guys/gals to survive on the streets! It's got everything to do with climate that a lot of these transplant bums come from elsewhere. I'm not saying we don't produce a bunch of our own, but if you easterners would keep your bums to yourselves.....
As i said before, there were def some Canucks fans involved, but to me, those aren't the true fans. I know at least 10 people who were at the game who left downtown immediately. I highly doubt that many of those involved were there for the right reason. There was a good article i was reading from the manager of London Drugs (i think) where he said it seemed like this group had this planned all along! They knew exactly where to go in the store to get the things they wanted and showed up with things in preparation for breaking in! THAT kind of punk is not a hockey fan period!!!
You know what my idea of a Canucks fan is? The 18,000+ who chanted GO CANUCKS GO all night, even in the final minute when the game was done! Pretty much every one of them stayed as the Canucks saluted them at the end and stayed AND cheered as the Bruins celebrated with the cup. Heck, even Tim Thomas got a nice round of applause, showing the respect of the true hockey fans! The only boos i heard were for Slozo's buddy, "the count". I seriously think the fans who were at the game were classy and represent this city and team much more than the hooligans who were outside!!! |

I couldn't agree more Alex. It must be tough watching the visiting team win the big one in your own building, and I found it extremely classy of not only the fans, but the Canucks, to give each other a 'little love', with their mutual salutes.
As far as that little orc Bettman getting the boos, it made it a little difficult for us at home to hear what he was saying, which was slightly unfortunate, but the sight of him looking up at Chara, like Howdy Doody to Buffalo Bob Smith, certainly made up for it!

That is one thing I'm pretty happy with, and honestly fully expected. The fans that are in the building are almost always respectful, and are hockey fans at heart - they know when they've been beaten by a better team, and acknowledged the fact with a well deserved cheer for Boston. Especially large cheers for hometown boy Lucic and BC grandpa Recchi of course.
I do not think that VAN would have gotten the same treatment in Boston, had they won the cup there.
I think Bettman gets booed everywhere he goes - I don't remember a time when I've seen a stadium cheer for him, he seems to be universally hated in fan-land. |

I agree Alex, and well said.
Everyone boos The Count (as they should), and the fans in the building were very classy. Like Fat Elvis said, it's a darn tough spot to be in, visitor's building, etc . . . they showed good class in there, and that is the Canadian way.
I agree, if it had been Vancouver in Boston winning . . . different story. Probably a few arrests later, the players would have to get ushered out under police protection from an unruly mob.
How'd the clean-up go - the one that was organised by regular city folk?

cleanup went fine, things are, well, clean - even Robson/Howe area by the Sears where the big police standoff took place. Walking down Georgia to work today was depressing, nearly every storefont window is boarded up. Mostly the city is stunned by it all. |

There were many many volunteers who spent their morning today assisting city crews in a clean up effort. While it's awesome to see, it's a shame it had to happen. Huge thanks to those involved in the cleanup and assistance in getting our city back to normal.
I'm appalled at the number of idiots who were clearly photo'd and video'd and posted online! So many of these morons have already been identified, but the question remains, will they be punished accordingly? I've heard rumours that they will likely be fined and put on probation???? That is simply not enough and if it's our laws that need changing, so be it. If it's our city that won't go after them, shame on them! Imagine down the road, maybe even next year, if the Canucks make it back to the big dance? Wouldn't it be nice to post some pics from this year and list below each idiot just how much he ended up being punished? I bet that would deter some idiots from repeating this crap! It'd be a much more effective deterrent to see "1 year in jail" rather than, "so and so was fined $500 and sentenced to 6 months probation".
I know it's not as big an event, but we have the Grey Cup here later this year (Nov). Wonder what sort of changes we're gonna see due to last nights nonsense? |

While I can't say for 100% sure if the 1990 finals serve as any indication, I remember Boston giving the Oilers pretty decent treatment when they won the cup on Bruins ice. I think the only person who got really booed was Petr Klima. |

I do remember that series fairly clearly, and you are absolutely right, the Boston fans were gracious in their loss and showed nothing but class.
Of course how a city could not, when watching(insert rousing theme music, perhaps from the Ten Commandments, or something equally awe inspiring, here) arguably the greatest collection of NHL stars, THE EDMONTON OILERS!!(fade from underwear rattling orchestral, godlike theme music), win the cup.
Sorry bout' that, I have a bias flashing disorder at times. |

'90 finals . . . where Edmonton's superstar line-up ran over the Bruins in 5 games. That's not compareable to a nasty series of 7 games, really, one which saw a record suspension for a late hit/concussion; a player get jeered while lyingon the ice with a broken back; more slashes and hacks and goalie stick pokes and dives then I have ever seen before. All that coupled with the eventual winners being down 2-0, then 3-2 in games, only to come back and win it all eventually against the heavy favourites.
To lose like that, and then rise up and try to be classy while clapping for the opposing team . . . is tough.
No, I don't think if the shoe was on the other foot, same situation reversed, that Boston would be classy (see: player lying on ice with broken back getting jeered as a flopper).

In the end the cup is in Boston where it deserves to be, they battled back all through these playoffs to eventually take the cup winning 2 elimination games. Congrats to them and the Canucks who seemed to run out of steam!!! bring on 2012. |

Slozo! I love your stubborness!
I'm not sure you're correct, nor will we ever know, but i'd like to think the Bruins fans would have given the Canucks a decent cheer had they won.

Although it's something we will never be able to prove, I don't agree that Boston fans would have been sore losers. I don't know the exact numbers, but I think Boston as lost their share of Finals between their last and most recent Cup wins. I don't recall Boston fans being sore losers after any of those loses.
I think that's an exagerated generalization without any basis for it. |

There was nothing funny about this riot (besides the guy getting sacked by the flash) I am very dissapointed that those [mod edit-derogatory term] from the olympics who blended in with the protesters came back.
