Wow, this has to be front loaded with either no NTC or a limited one like Luongo has where one side or the other (or both) can somehow opt out later? Otherwise, 4mil per season is a steal.
Def interested in seeing the terms / breakdown of this deal! |

oh man, is it ever front loaded - never mind Gillis not going for this, I'm not sure how this will get OK'd by the NHL.
Years and salary per season: - 1 : 10M (8M signing bonus, 2M salary) - 2: 8M (5M signing bonus, 3M salary) - 3/4/5/6: 4M - 7: 3M - 8/9/10: 1M
If he misses the last 3 years it becomes a 7yr/37M deal, at 5.4M per season, but according to TSN BUF will take a 4M cap hit for the contract.
According to Bob McKenzie, this deal does not violate the CBA, and is valid in the eyes of the NHL. Hopefully he'll break down how/why - perhaps the signing bonuses? |

I'll stick with Boston as the Notheast champs. Would be alot closer in my opinion if Buffalo can land Richards. |

Canucks sign Salo to a one year two million dollar contract. Wow that's a great deal I didn't think they would be able to sign him for only one year.

Did anyone mention the Montador signing by Chicago?
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Steve Montador to a four year, 11-million dollar deal.
He's a solid add-on.

Oh, and there's this deal as well not mentioned:
The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms with Jonathan Ericsson, inking the defenceman to a three-year, $9.75 million deal.
The club will take an annual cap hit of $3.25 million in the deal.
For a young and albeit promising defenceman, that seems a mite expensive, no?

word is he was looking for 2 years at 1.5 per season, but took the 1 year with the higher salary instead. If he can still play after next season the Canucks will probably keep him again, so no worries. I like the deal too. |

also hidden away in the Salo announcement... Canucks resigned Higgins to a 2yr deal worth 1.9M per season. I like that signing too, he showed some great chemistry with Kesler on that second line. |

Higgins signing looks like great value to me . . . he's a guy that easily can play on a second line, but can also move down to a third line role at times. And like you said, gelled well with Kesler.
Wisniewski?!? Brutal overpay.
On the Jaromir Jagr watch: The Pens rescinded their deal, and now suddenly the Red Wings have chimed in and said they are out of the running for his services as well.
Hmm. Does this affect the Rangers, if they get Jagr then they don't get Richards? Lots of decisions to make today, looks like it'll get interesting. At this point, Montreal is almost looking like front-runner for Jagr now . . . who'd have thought that?

I know the Rangers were one of the original 5 teams that the Jagr camped reached out to, but i haven't heard anything from the Rangers end which indicates they are interested in bringing him back to NYC.
Assuming the Pens or Wings don't get back in the mix, Montreal looks to be the frontrunner for the time being...although there's been lots of mumblings about Philadelphia possibly having some interest. |

Jagr signs for 1 year, 3mil, with the Flyers. Huge!
Brad Richards is definitely not going there now . . . and it sure looks like Philly is gearing up for a one year run at the cup.

Jovonovski signs with Florida! 4 yrs, no idea on price.
What is going on in Florida? Oh, wait . . . I forgot it was Dave Tallon there . . . certainly putting his stamp on this team right away. Brian Cambell, Jovocop, and Theodore.
Did I mention Jose Theodore got signed by Florida too?

Varlamov dealt to Colorado, Washington gets a 2012 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder.
What a fantastic return for Washington! IMHO
Is Vokoun going to Washington now? Seems like preparations for it . . .

Not sure if i see the Caps going after Vokoun...i expect them to open the season with the tandem of Michal Neuvirth & Braden Holtby.
As for the return on Varlamov...impressive work by MacPhee. That's an awfully lot to give up for an unproven goaltender. |

Yeah, I agree, Vokoun in WSH seems highly unlikely given their young goalies.
I echo the great return for Varlamov - I would have thought a first and second rounder would have been good return for either of the other two goalies, never mind odd-man-out Varlamov. Mind you, if he can stay off the IR, he has plenty of upside, a-la Lehtonen |

Not sure if I missed the posts, but the Oilers signed Barker to a 1 year 2.25 mil deal, Hordichuk to a 1 year deal Im not sure of the money, Ben Eager for 3 years 3.4 mil deal, Belanger to a 3 year deal, and traded Foster for Sutton. They also released Souray, who was then signed by Dallas on a 1 year 1.6 mil deal I beleive. Dallas also signed Ryder to a 2 year $7 million deal.
Garon is backing up Roloson again, Budaj is in Montreal Giguere is in Colorado, Auld is back in Ottawa, and Florida signed Bergenheim. Most of what I got came from sportsnets tracker http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl_signing_tracker/

I'm anxiously awaiting the Brad Richards decision. He's already stated he'll make up his mind this today...hopefully it's sometime this morning! With the Richards/Rangers rumors starting before the trade deadline, i'm going to be VERY disappointed if he signs elsewhere. It'd be a dream come true to have Brad a Ranger.
There was no shortage of action on Day 1. I like what Washington has done thus far, adding Joel Ward, Roman Hamrlik & Jeff Halpern. As well as getting a 1st & 2nd round pick for Varlamov (the 1st which could potentially be a top 5 pick).

wow, what a signing by WSH - Vokoun clearly thinks he has a chance to win there, good pickup. I didn't think WSH would be interested...but at 1.5M, everything changes. |

Wow that's the craziest thing. Philly unloads to sign Bryzgalov. Washington trades away their second goalie for a first and a second rounder. A first rounder that is potentially a top 5 pick. Then they upgrade significantly their goaltending situation by signing Vokoun to a bargain.
In my mind, so far, Washington are the clear winners in the offseason.
On a side note Toronto lost the sweepstake for Richards so they got Connoly. It's good and an upgrade but still not scary, they at least now have an option and can put Bozak where he should be, centering the third line. Hopefully Tim Connoly can stay healthy for the most part and play 2 seasons of 70 games or more. |

Well, that remains to be seen, WSH is now in bit o' cap trouble.
- 22 players signed, need 1 more - 500K in cap space - notable RFA's not signed yet: Karl Alzner, Troy Brower (the same Brower that they gave up a first round pick for). I'm sure they want to keep both.
They still have work to do. |

If Lombardi can come back to form he will be a good acquisition. This will give them more depth on the top six and he could easily take MacArthur spot.
But I think Cody Franson is the best part of this deal, they get a 23 years old defenseman that is 6 foot 5. Nashville definitly wanted to get rid of Lombardi's salary (7 million for two seasons) and for that they gave a better player away in Franson and got Lebda and a prospect (Stanley)
Franson for this season is .800 salary and is a RFA next season. Lebda has a 1.45 million contract for this season and is a UFA next season. |

Still have work and still lots of time. They can get rid of either Knuble, Fehr or Chimera to leave place for Brouwer. And with a defense that already has Green, Wideman, Hamrlik, Poti, Schultz, Carlson and Erskine this leaves little room for Alzner. One of them wont get a spot and his cap hit wont matter. A third goalie will be easy to get for under a million. |

Leafs get Fransen and Lombardi for Lebda and Stanley from Nashville. I like Fransen 23yrs old and a big body presence.
