Lidstrom now has 5 Norris trophies. Does this mean we now have to say he's as good as Bourque?
He's a great defenseman, don't get me wrong, but I hoenstly think he's had less competition to win the Norris. Niedermeyer hasn't shown himself as the superstar he is until the last few years. His first years on Jersey were average. I don't think this was his fault at all tough. I think it was the system he was being forced to play in. Had he played for another team and been allowed to play like he can, he would have received more attention and probably a few more Norris nominations or perhaps even wins. Lidstrom won his Norris's when the old gaurd was thinning out. I don't think this lessens his achievement but it certainly doesn't automatically put him in Bourque's league. Thoughts?

You also have to remember with Bourque that he should have won a few more. Coffey shoudn't have his name on a "Best Defenseman" trophy. He should have his name on some other yet to be created trophy like "Most unique player who doesn't quite fit any category for any of the other awards" trophy.
Also, Bourque lost a VERY close vote to Messier for the Hart in 1990. I think the closest ever, at the time anyway. They were both very deserving Hart winners that year - and when I say that I say it with consideration for the TRUE meaning of the Hart trophy. In fact, if there were any year where there should have been co-winners, that was the year. I think he also lost to Gretzky one year for the Hart in the '80s. I haven't followed Lidstrom closely enough to comment on whether he deserved any Harts but just thought I'd throw that info about Bourque into the mix (my duty as a Bourque fan I guess). |

I don't think that Lidstrom is as good as Bourque, but he is the best today. You can say all you want about systems and different players and stuff, but true greatness shines through any system. I don't think anyone could convince me that he is not the best defencemen in the league today. I would put him in the top 10 of the last 25 years and the top 20 all time as well.

come on guys.... give the guy some credit. I think it's a viable discussion who's better, Lidstrom or Bourque. They are both all-time top players, not to take anything away from either of them. If you ask me, I'd give the defensive edge to Lidstrom and the offensive edge to Bourque, but both are outstanding. |

Some comments by Vigneault and Pronger on Lidstrom.
Just ask Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault, who won the Jack Adams Trophy on Thursday night as the NHL’s best coach this season.
“The number of minutes that he plays, hard both ends of the rink,” Vigneault said, shaking his head in amazement. “He’s probably one of the most complete to ever play the game.”
Pronger insists that Lidstrom is so complete that it is virtually impossible to point out his best asset.
“I don’t think it would be one thing, because he does a number of things great,” he said. “He sees the ice extremely well. That first pass, patience, there is a number of things that make him the player that he is. To say one thing would probably do a disservice.”
Strong praise indeed, but praise shared by some of his contemporaries. So, is it fair to ask if Lidstrom is possibly the best defenseman to ever lace on a pair of skates? Yes.
“Compared to everybody that played?” Vigneault asks. “He has got to be up there. He has to be one of the top ones to ever play the game. Not as offensive, maybe, as some of the other guys. But, he’s up there as one of the most complete defenseman to play the game.”
Agreed, says Pronger.
“To put that kind of resume together, he certainly has to rank in the top five all time,” Pronger says. “Certainly Bobby Orr would be No. 1 and you might look back at some of the older players of a different generation; but (Lidstrom) certainly would have to be at the top of this generation.”
