Poll Question:
forget souray is injured. If he was healthy, would 5.5 million per year be too much for the oilers to pay for him?

Definitely, Souray is a one-dimensional player and that is his shot. McCabe was signed to a ridiculous contract because MLSE, or JFJ, thought he would produce like he did that year. After hearing of the Pronger rumors I thought McCabe was gone. But as luck would have it JFJ is a complete and total retard. So now we have a defenseman that we pay upwards of 7 million dollars to score on his own net.
Souray is probably worse in his end then McCabe is in my opinion. Mark my words, Oiler fans are gonna hate this guy soon. |

As an Oiler Fan, and a realist, I have been warned by many people about Souray. Ultimately, before his injury, he wasn't playing that poorly in his end at all. They had him putting in time of the PK as well, and he was fine. He's a little weak on the stick at times and at 6'4", 233 lbs, he is not as mobile as a lot of the forwards he's trying to defend against. At the same time, rarely does he get outplayed physically and he uses his body pretty well.
I am not saying at all that he belongs in the Top 10-15 defensemen in the league, but his was not as bad as everyone said he was.
And please don't come back to me with +/-. I don't really care that Souray was -28 or whatever last year. Think about this, Neidermayer last year was a +6 and was on the ice for 63 goals against. Zdeno Chara was on the ice for 64 goals against and was -21.
Getting back to the question, I can't say if Souray is worth $5.5 million. If he can come close or do better than his 64 points and get close to 20 PPG, for sure he's worth it.
Think about the fact that he's a top 2 defenseman on every team in the league save Detroit and maybe Anahiem. And, he's for sure on the 1st PP line on every team in the league. He has skills and talents that you can't teach.
If you are under the age of 15, please do some research before you make a post about anything pre-1997. |

I don't think he's grossly overpaid. Anytime a defenceman nearly leads his team in goals, you know he has some major offensive upside. He gets a lot of flack for being a huge minus player, but everyone on the Habs has been a minus player lately.
Probably his best defensive quality is that he's mean. He plays with a hate on, and that makes him fairly effective, even if his skills are somewhat lacking on his side of the red line. |

Alot of what you are saying was said by McCabe also. Do any of you really believe that he can produce these numbers again?? Before his magical year last year he had been a 35 point producer, and before that racked up an avarage of 8 points per season.
Last year was Souray's year, his fluke. He will follow in McCabe's footsteps as one of the overpriced, overpaid defenseman by the end of this year. |

Whats that I hear??? Oh ya its JFJ whispering in Kevin Lowe's ear. "Dont do it man, dont do it," he says to Lowe. The other noise I hear is the sound of sirens still going off after Lowe signed Souray.
I think JFJ knows he screwed up with McCabe and this exact thing will happen with Kevin Lowe and his big signing of Souray a couple of months back.
Yes of coarse it is to much to pay for Sheldon Souray. As LF101 mentioned before he is definetely a one dimentional player and 5.5 million is to much to be paying him.
Oh oh wait....I also still hear the goal horn of McCabe's own goal all the way from Buffalo. |

That was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Same with him tripping over the net against Carolina I think.
I thought the samne way about Souray and Mccabe is just a good example of whaqt Souray might become. I'll try to find a link of him tripping over the net and some other funny Mccabe moves.

I wouldnt go as far to say "it was the funniest thing I have ever seen", but it was pretty clumsy by McCabe, and for 5 million a year I think Leafs fans want to see more than that. |

It was pretty funny though. I also believe Mccabes deal was closer to about 5.65 million a year, which just makes it worse.

McCabe's current deal averages $5.75 million per year. The break down is:
07/08-$7.15 million 08/09-$6.15 million 09/10-$4.15 million 10/11-$4.15 million 11/12-UFA
I get all the salary information from:
http://www.nhlnumbers.com/
It may not be 100% accurate, but it's close enough
The guy makes mistakes, but it's really funny to see how much people throw into the fire over the goal on himself. Steve Smith didn't get that much heat and that cost the Oilers a shot at the Cup!

I guess it's only because it's Mccabe, he's known for 2 main reasons, his slap shots and his mistakes.

Hey Beans, thanks for that link. I had it on my old favourites list once, but I must have deleted it. I find stuff like that interesting (like how Datsyuk is making 6.7 mil this year compared to Zetterberg's 2.7 million - that seems unfair). |

Wow i never knew that Datsyuk was making about 4 million more than Zetterberg. I like to think I am knowledgeable about hockey but this is coming as a shock to me. Not taking anything away from Datsyuk but Zetterberg definetely deserves more then him. This could actually make for an interesting topic...How teamates paychecks lineup to one and another. |

Why does everybody pick on Datsyuk. I can agree that Zetterberg is getting underpayed, but more than Datsyuk? They deserve around the same amount. If Detroit doesn't cough up enough money, Ithink Zetterberg is gone next season.
