Who are the ten greatest American born players and how do you rank them? Here is an older article from SI. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/tom_layberger/02/14/US.stars/index.html Chelios not in the top three is ridiculous.
My rank: 1- Chelios 2- LaFontaine 3- Mark Howe 4- Roenick 5- Leetch 6- Modano 7- Mullen 8- Richter/Barrasso 9- Gary Suter 10- Neil Broten
I don't know enough about the older guys like Brimsek to be able to comment on them.

He was a lousy defenceman. Picture Paul Coffey but not quite as good offensively and quite a bit worse defensively.

1. Lafontaine 2. Chelios 3. Leetch 4. Hously 5. Roenick 6. Modano 7. Howe 8. Mullen 9. Broten 10. Nilan(Chris that is)
I really tryed to find a spot for Kevin Steevens, Richter, Barrasso, Vanbiesbruk(spelling?), Suter and a few others...but a top ten list doesn't leave much flexibility. |

My ranking:
1 - Chelios 2 - Modano * 3 - Roenick 4 - LaFontaine 5 - Leetch 6 - Mark Howe 7 - Mullen * 8 - K. Tkachuk 9 - G. Suter 10- N. Broten
* subjectivity may be entering this a little because these guys helped me win hockey pools - Mullen in '89 and Modano in '99 - anyone want to go in with me in 2009?
I do think Modano in particular deserves a bit higher ranking than he is getting on a lot of the lists though.
I'm going to leave goalies off as I don't like mixing them in with these lists |

I started doing this but then I got bored. Good topic, I just can't stay motivated, as a Canadian hockey guy. Picking my top ten American players feels like picking my top ten dentist appointments. I apologize to my American friends/rivals.
I had Lafontaine at the top, though. There was a time (a season or maybe two) where if there had been no Mario Lemiuex, he was arguably the most amazing player in the game. It was a short reign, however. |
