Poll Question:
I'm taking a poll of opinions here because I wanna see the results. Do you think that a division leading team, like Carolina should be up there in the top three along side Ottawa, Montreal and New Jersey?
Well, here's the question if it hasn't been clear enough, basically, if the playoffs were right now, with Montreal, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, New Jersey and Philadelphia ahead of them, should Carolina be the third playoff seed?
Ellis or Mason?

I think it is one of Bettman's strategies to make sure every geographic region has someone to root for come April, and keeps the interest of the American market longer.
Habs get number 25 this year |

It is a fact Americans gravitate toward close rivalries in sports. An example would be cross town or cross state rivalries. They have been known to get hate-ons for each other and this translates into interest and ticket sales of course. Bettman doesn't miss a thing does he? |

My ideas...
As suggested earlier a balanced schedule where every team plays each other.
8 divisional games >>> 32 <<< 4 home and 4 away 2 conference games > 20 <<< home and home 2 opp. conf. games >> 30 <<< home and home Total >>>>>>>>>>>>> 82 <<<<
Then two changes...
1.) The Division winners just make the playoffs no matter what their record is (not top three as it is now).
2.) Add the new "NHL crossover" rule. Any team in the opposite Conference that has more points takes the place of the worst team in the other Conference, and is reseeded point wise in that Conference.
Below you see the 2006-07 standings, and then the new standings with the new rules applied.

PuckNuts, that is absolutely brilliant! I would love the whole Crossover thing! I really wish you would take over for Bettman!

That is a good idea. It makes perfect sense and is the best way to decide who makes the playoffs. Now send this idea to Bettman.

i like but bettman is trying to make it like baseball,,,, american league and national league for those of you who don't watch baseball,,, the "conferences" are really two seperate leagues teams like ay the red soxs and the chi cubs havn't played each other since 67 there is 2 weeks of inter-league where the each teams plays two teams from the opposite league,,,, i like the crossover idea ,,,, i would also like the idea of seeing all the teams in the nhl more often,,, i would love to see L.A play here in montreal....

I said this last time this was posted and ill say it again unless every team play every team the cross over is not fair. If every team plays every team an equal amount of times you may as well go with a 1-16 bracket.
Lets say you finish 8th in the West and you get bumped from somebody in the East your going to be pissed because you had to play against tougher teams all year long. Detroit, Anaheim, and so on it’s just not a level playing field that way.
In the MLB your 2 weeks of AL vs. NL doesn’t make much difference you play within your Div. so much those few games in that 2 week stretch wont impact the standings to much.

then just shooting this out there why not copy cat the m playoff brackette have only the division leader s make the playoffs and add in a wild card for the best second place team'>? not saying i'd prefer this but it would be interesting!

It would make things interesting and also alot tougher to win the cup because you have to be good all year long not just at the right time. |
