I just read on NHL.com that on Nov. 22 of this year, before a game with the Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens will retire Patrick Roy's #33.

There have been many arguements both for an against.

What do you think???

considering that he is arguably the best goaltender in history I can't see why it wouldn't be retired. He brought them championships and success almost single handedly. much like sundin though, he left on bad terms so only the fans will be pissed off. but the team and organization owe him bigtime - so do the fans but many are too blind to see it!

I'm all for the Bruins winning the game that night!

You know what I think Beans. Any Montreal fan from those days who trashes Patrick Roy is arrogant and doesn't appreciate what the guy VERY MUCH helped bring to them. Such fans spit in the faces of long-suffering fans in Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Buffalo, St. Louis... There is ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION that he deserves to be formally thanked by that city. Retiring the number is 100% appropriate.

Anyone that ever followed the team, the league, or the sport could not argue against this. Anyone that does would lose respect from their peers. He is one of the best five goaltenders of all time and he is one of the greatest Habs of all time.

As for that game itself...the Bruins should win because the home team almost always loses after this lengthy ceremony.

See, this last post is what I was expected. I has certain that we would get all the garbage about Patrick Roy off the ice. What a joke!

As said before, Roy is the biggest reason that Montreal has their past 2 Cup and he belongs with the other great Canadien goalies such as Dryden and Plante who are already in the rafters.

If what Roy has done off the ice is so bad, why no repercussions on the likes of LeFleur???

I was waiting for this. Didn't expect is to take so long.

A little on the side, but interesting none the less:

When Patrick Roy's jersey is retired by the Candiens, he will be the 6th player in NHL history to have their number retired by more than one team.

Name the other 5??

Absolutely he deserves to have his number retired. The man may be an ass off the ice; but having your number retired has nothing to do with that.

One of the greatest goalies of all time, IMO.

Too bad wife beating isn't an olympic sport, then he could add to that impressive resume of his. Ya i totally agree, as long as he is a good player he shouldn't be held accountable for his actions, good call.

Just a guess.......
Gretz, Mess, Howe, Bobby Hull and Pat LaFontaine?

The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2009.

All are correct except Lafontaine.

Think of defensemen and Andyhack. That should get the last one.

Surprisingly no. Park is not retired in either Boston nor New York.

Not so old.
