Poll Question:
Which would you rather have? A team made up of Martins or a team made up of players with hyphens in their names?

The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2009.

It's Friday, so I'm game!

Let's compare the potential teams, shall we? First, the Martins:

GOALIES - Martin Brodeur, Martin Biron, and probably Martin Gerber or Martin Prusek as 3rd G (Mark: A+)
DEFENCE - Martin Skoula, Paul Martin, Martin Lojek, Martin Grenier, and a few more Martins that are marginal NHLers (Mark: C)
FORWARDS - Martin St.Louis, Martin Lapointe, Martin Erat, Martin Havlat, Martin Straka, Martin Gelinas, Martin Hanzal, and some decent role players/young guys (Mark: low on centers, so B+)

OVERALL SCORE: Very strong goaltending and some forward punch with a few defensive liabilities. With the goalies stealing half the games alongside dynamic playmakers like St.Louis, Erat and the ageless Straka, and Skoula and Paul Martin anchoring an otherwise shaky defence by logging in a ton of ice time, this is a team that could compete with the top tier. A-

The Hyphens:
G - John Sebastien-Giguere, Marc-Andre Fleury (Mark: A)
D - John-Michael Liles, Marc-Andre Bergeron, and a bunch of AHLers (Mark: D)
F - Pierre Marc-Bouchard, Marc-Andre Bernier . . . and the list gets very thin after that. (Mark: E)

OVERALL SCORE: Great goaltending, but they would need to stand on their heads with the defence in front of them, plus - they can't score. This is a team that would struggle at the bottom of the heap, and Giggy and Fleury would see enough rubber to fill a highway. C-

Head to head: No contest, as the Martins are superior in every espect of the game, except for goal, where it's pretty even - but even there, I give them the slight edge. St.Louis and Havlat would make that inexperienced defence look silly to be sure.
SCORE: Martins 7 - Hyphens 1

I'm glad somebody understood the question. The Martins do probably have the edge based on offence, but you could include Per-Jussi Axelsson and Jean-Pierre Dumont to boost the hyphens a bit. And if you want to go all-time, Lars-Erik Sjoberg, Jean-Jacques Daigneault, and Aki-Petteri Berg would at least give Bergeron and Liles a shift off every once in a while. You could also add Marc-Edouard Vlasic to the D.

The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2009.
